They're talking about Kirk Ferentz and the Chiefs again

For the third time in the last four years, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz has come up as a name to keep an eye on as the potential head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Oh, yeah. It is about that time of year. The time where we start saying Kirk Ferentz could be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Within about an hour of each other, NFL Network's Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport tweeted:

Oh, really?

Context is important here. Not saying this report is bullshit but this is the third time in the last four years we've heard this.

A little history...

Kirk Ferentz to the Chiefs: January 2009

But with the Kansas City Chiefs hiring Ferentz's good friend Scott Pioli as general manager on Tuesday, the rumors have heated up again. Though Herm Edwards remains the Chiefs coach for now, it's widely believed he will be dismissed as Pioli picks his own head man. New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo should get a look, but Ferentz has reportedly been one of Pioli's top choices from the start.

Kirk Ferentz to the Chiefs: December 2011

The Kansas City Chiefs' firing of coach Todd Haley earlier Monday once again will pose the question of whether Ferentz would leave Iowa for an NFL job. When the Kansas City Star published its list of candidates to replace Haley, from "the realistic to semi-realistic, to just-plain-crazy," guess whose name appears at the top? Colleague Bill Williamson also lists Ferentz as one of the Chiefs' top candidates.

And now December 2012.

So, excuse me if I'm a little hesitant to believe this stuff. Maybe it all ends up being accurate. But past history has CLEARLY shown that we need to be careful with the Ferentz rumors and reports.
