Despite the Jovan Belcher tragedy, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced they will play Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs statement read:
"After discussions between the league office, Head Coach Romeo Crennel and Chiefs team captains, the Chiefs advised the NFL that it will play tomorrow's game vs. the Carolina Panthers at its originally scheduled time."
Kansas City mayor Sly James was quoted earlier in the day as saying the Chiefs wanted to play the game.
I can see how playing the game might be a distraction the players welcome right now. It keeps your mind off of everything -- well, as much as you can keep your mind off of it -- for at least a few hours. Football brought them all together. I can see how they might want to play.
This is going to be an incredibly difficult game for me to cover tomorrow and I'm further removed from the situation than Chiefs players, so I can't imagine how they feel.
