United Football League reportedly suspends operations

The UFL has canceled its remaining games after just four of eight weeks have been played.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The United Football League (UFL) has told its players and teams that the rest of their 2012 season has been canceled, according to agent David Canter. The league has battled financial issues for years, and was forced to delay the start of its fourth year by a week earlier this fall.

The UFL has continuously lost money throughout its existence, including dropping $100 million in its first two seasons. In 2011, the league pushed its start date back from August to September.

Paying players has been an issue, as many payments have been delayed. Players would receive $1,000 payments when owed $7,000. Coaches also had payment issues, as Marty Schottenheimer and Dennis Green both sought legal action against the league for failure to pay.

The schedule was supposed to include a total of 16 games between four teams, with the championship to be held on Dec. 1. Half of the those games have been played, all of which have been televised on CBS Sports Network. The largest single-game attendance for any game this season has been 8,023, with a low of 601.
