RB Chris Johnson and the Tennessee Titans finally agreed on a contract extension that will pay the running back $53.5 million in new money and between $55-56 million overall in the next six years. The extension includes $30 million in guaranteed money.
This makes the deal RB Jamaal Charles signed with the Chiefs look like a bargain. (Of course, we have to include the caveat that these contract numbers can be interpreted in so many ways because of some of the funny language in there.)
Charles signed a five-year, $32.5 million extension last December that included $13 million guaranteed. Charles' average per year is reportedly around $5.4 million while it appears Johnson is getting about $9.5 million per year.
Which deal is better?
The Chiefs got the better end of this, I think. Charles didn't hold out at all and they got him at a cheaper rate. I don't think you can say Johnson is that much better than Charles, if he's better at all.
