Chiefs Depth Chart: Loaded In The Backfield

The Kansas City Chiefs have quite a bit of talent in the backfield according to their latest depth chart. The most noticeable item on the depth chart at running back is RB Thomas Jones once again listed on the first team and RB Jamaal Charles on the second team.

I wouldn't worry about that at all. They were listed the same way last year and changed their approach in each game so, if Charles is the best back against a particular defense, the Chiefs won't let the depth chart hamper their decision to give him carries.

With that out of the way, here's how the Chiefs backfield looks on the depth chart:

RB: Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle

FB: Le'Ron McClain, Mike Cox, Shane Bannon, Tervaris Johnson

One interesting note about this is that Dexter McCluster is not listed with the running backs. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley suggested a few months back that McCluster could see more carries out of the backfield as a running back and he's been working, for the most part, with the running backs in camp. That's not reflected on the depth chart.

At running back, we know the Chiefs will keep Charles and I feel confident they'll keep Jones as well.

At fullback, I'm confident the Chiefs will keep McClain and I'd predict they put Bannon on the practice squad where he should be safe.

That leaves these guys among my question marks: RB Jackie Battle, FB Mike Cox and FB Tervaris Johnson. Last year the Chiefs carried two fullbacks on the active roster with Cox and FB Tim Castille so it wouldn't be unheard of to carry both McClain and Cox this year.

So this is where my depth chart projection stands for the Chiefs backfield:

RB: Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle

FB: Le'Ron McClain, Mike Cox, Shane Bannon (practice squad)
