The Kansas City Chiefs' first game on their 2011 preseason schedule is only 11 days away, on August 12th. To give you a little more perspective on just how quickly that will be coming up, the Kansas City Chiefs only have seven practices scheduled from now until then (plus seven walk throughs).
So the coaching staff is going to need to quickly evaluate the new free agents, their own players and of course the new 2011 draft picks. The Chiefs current roster stands at 77 players, 13 short of the 90-player maximum allowed under the new CBA rules. Remember, the Chiefs don't (and probably won't) have to fill up their roster to 90 players.
Over the weekend, the Chiefs signed two new free agents - NT Kelly Gregg and WR Zeke Marshausen - and re-signed one of their own - DE Wallace Gilberry.
By our count, the Chiefs have made four reported 2011 NFL free agent signings that were not their own players.
Don't expect many more signings. The initial wave is over and many positions in the free agency market have essentially dried up. If you need a good example of that, check out the fact that free agent NT Aubrayo Franklin, who many Chiefs fans wanted KC to sign, is headed back to the San Francisco 49ers to talk about a new deal after not getting any bites in the free agency market.

Kansas City free agents re-signed to Chiefs: C Casey Wiegmann, S Jon McGraw, CB Travis Daniels, WR Terrance Copper, TE Leonard Pope, OT Ryan O'Callaghan, RB Jackie Battle, S Reshard Langford (ERFA), Wallace Gilberry (RFA) and RB Mike Cox (RFA).
New free agents signed: WR Steve Breaston signed from Cardinals; NT Kelly Gregg reportedly signed from Ravens; WR Zeke Anderson signed off the street; and LB Brandon Siler from the Chargers.
Free agents not re-signed: DE Shaun Smith (Titans), DT Ron Edwards (Panthers), LB Charlie Anderson, FB Tim Castille, LB Corey Mays, C Rudy Niswanger and QB Brodie Croyle.
