As expected, Kansas City Chiefs DE Wallace Gilberry signed his restricted free agent tender. Gilberry told 610 Sports last week he planned to sign it sometime soon and he did. This means that Gilberry is under contract with the Chiefs for the 2011-12 season.
Gilberry finished the 2010 season second on the team in sacks with eight. He played mostly in nickel situations last year and bulked up this offseason to 285 pounds in hopes of becoming more of a three-down player. Whether he's a candidate for a long-term contract will be one of the interesting story lines to follow moving forward.
Gilberry is one of four restricted free agents for the Chiefs. FB Mike Cox signed his tender so he's in for 2011 and we're waiting on CB Brandon Carr and OT Barry Richardson to sign their tenders. Carr was tendered at the first round level and Richardson at the second round level.
These restricted free agents can't practice until Aug. 4 either way so they're not missing much.
For those who don't understand what a restricted free agent is the key to remember is that (without getting too detailed) the Chiefs essentially own their rights so they're not in danger of losing any of them.
