Chiefs Can Officially Announce Free Agency Moves Tonight

On Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli held a news conference and he mentioned that the Chiefs don't announce signings until ink officially hits paper. In other words, they don't want to jump the gun and say a guy has signed if it's not official because, as the Washington Redskins learned with WR Brandon Stokley, these are technically just verbal commitments for now.

WR Steve Breaston is a good example. He already went on 810 WHB talking about signing with the Chiefs. We know he'll be a Chief. But have you heard a word from the Chiefs on that? No, you have not. It's not "official" yet.

So that's why you need to stick around here at 5:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) tonight. That's when new contracts for unrestricted free agents can be signed and turn official.

That includes the Chiefs own free agents, too, as they can announce those moves tonight. As Chris noted this morning, here's where we stand on the Chiefs own free agents:

Unrestricted free agents reportedly agreed to terms: C Casey Wiegmann, WR Terrance Copper, CB Travis Daniels, S Jon McGraw.

Unrestricted free agents remaining: LB Charlie Anderson, RB Jackie Battle, FB Tim Castille, OT Ryan O'Callaghan, LB Corey Mays, TE Leonard Pope, C Rudy Niswanger and QB Brodie Croyle.

They could announce the reported signings on Friday night as well so keep an eye out for that. I'd also expect some surprises as every year they'll sign someone that was totally off our radar.

The Chiefs will be hitting the practice field for their first training camp practice at 3:30 p.m. today but because of the free agency madness I'm going to stick around here tonight (if you were wondering).
