Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 5/25

New, comments

Good morning, Chiefs fans. There is a lot of Kansas City Chiefs news out there this morning. We start off with updates on the collection of items for the recovery in Joplin and end up with some love for Len.

A rain-soaked Tuesday afternoon didn't discourage hundreds of Chiefs fans and area residents from filling up Arrowhead Stadium's Lot C to lend a hand in tornado relief efforts. Arrowhead was open throughout the day for bottled-water and monetary donations benefiting tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri and Reading, Kansas.

The community response was overwhelming.

One of the easiest ways is to take part in the bottled water drive being coordinated through the Chiefs. On Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. they will be collecting bottled water at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs also announced Tuesday night that FEMA officials have asked for donations of work gloves, batterries of all types, heavy duty trash bags and flashlights. Those can be made on Wednesday at Arrowhead as well.

They are referred to as Street Free Agents, but SFA could also be SCFA or Second Chance Free Agent.

An SFA is a player that was found wanting by a pro football team that signed him to a contract and then after a period of time released him. He’s then "on the street" available to sign with any team in the league.

Every NFL team has SFAs in their past that made history for their performances. The Chiefs organization had one of the finest SFA’s in pro football history in Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson.

I believe that teams with many players practicing together can benefit more than teams like the Chiefs, who are working with small numbers. The only Chiefs I saw today before being shown the door were Cassel, Baldwin and wide receivers Jerheme Urban and Jeremy Horne.

That doesn't mean those guys won't see benefits.

With the National Football League's lockout ongoing, Kansas City Chiefs guard Ryan Lilja went back to school. Just down the road at Broken Arrow Elementary.

A few familiar faces were still at the school, where Lilja was among its first students. His sixth-grade tile still had its spot along a wall in the school's hallway - though he said he now wished he'd have another shot at making a better one.

Lockout fallout: How impacted will the Chiefs be by the work stoppage?

On a scale from 1 to 10 (with 10 being the most significantly impacted), the Chiefs rate a three. Kansas City has much of its lineup and coaching staff from a division-winning team returning; the biggest issue now will be integrating the rookies who will be expected to make an instant impact.

Getting Ricky Stanzi in the fifth round was a steal. He is not a special player but he is very steady and showed improvement every year playing in a pro-style offense. It would not surprise me if he is the Chiefs starter by his third year.

Len Dawson is one of the NFL's forgotten greats and while people are busy slobbering over Joe Namath, what they fail to realize is that it was Dawson -- not Namath -- who was the AFL's best quarterback before the merger with the NFL.
