The 2011 Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft continues with tmurawsk choosing for the Arizona Cardinals at No. 38...
The position that is of much need for Arizona at this point is very obvious. I still believe that the Cardinals will make a trade for a starting QB (Kolb!!), but unfortunately this lockout creates a huge problem in terms of a trade. It's not out of the question, however, that Arizona could still trade a 2012 1st round pick for Kolb this year once the lockout is lifted.
But I can't assume any of this will happen. Since I missed out on selecting Gabbert and Newton with my 1st round pick, this pick has to be a QB. Kudos go out to Max Hall and John Skelton for having to be pushed into such a stressful position as rookies but they are most likely not starting QB's in the foreseeable future. I fully expect the Cardinals to also pick up a veteran QB in free agency (McNabb?) to let their new rookie QB sit on the bench for at least one year.
Bravo to Dirty South for taking Christian Ponder with his Cincinnati pick. I like Ponder a lot and he would have been my pick here. I also had to consider Colin Kaepernick with this pick, but I believe there is a better fit at QB still left on the board. So instead....
With the 38th pick, the Arizona Cardinals select...
Jake Locker, QB Washington Huskies
I'm actually really surprised that Locker is still on the board at this point. I think Seattle will take him at #25 instead of Andy Dalton, but I like Dalton so I won't argue that too much. The only thing really working against my selection of Locker here is that it was reported no one, at least of importance, from Arizona was present at Locker's Pro Day. That doesn't necessarily mean that Arizona is not interested, but usually teams should pay closer attention to QB's seeing as how it's the most important position on the field.
I've heard numerous reports about the comparison between Locker and Ben Roethlisberger, who was coached by HC Whisenhunt, in terms of skills so that may be a sign. I know Locker has his accuracy problems, but I think a good amount of that had to do with a horrible offensive line, poor pass protection, and some scrubs at WR. Those issues can be corrected.
What Locker does have is great footwork/mobility/arm release and the toughness/leadership needed to play in the NFL as a QB. His accuracy and decision making skills will need some work, but Whisenhunt can fix that over time. Locker will be given a year to sit on the bench and learn the game, while working on some of his fundamental issues. Pay attention to Kaepernick, though. He's climbing up draft boards and he very well could be selected before Locker. (No consideration for the bum, Mallet, haha)
