The 2011 Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft continues with saskwatch choosing for the Indianapolis Colts at No. 53...
As I stated in the first round post, the Indianapolis Colts have quite a few needs for a playoff team. In round one they made a selection to help bolster their offensive line with the selection of OT Gabe Carimi. Bill Polian is one of the better GM's in the league, and will stick pretty close to his board and take what he feels is a player worthy of these position in the draft.
The Colts still need help on the offensive line, and I think Ben Ijalana would be a good pick, but I can't imagine them taking two tackles with the first two picks of the draft. They also have a need at defensive tackle (as they seem to every year), but I don't see a defensive lineman that I want to take here. They need to find a future number one receiver to replace Reggie Wayne, and Titus Young would be an intriguing pick, but with Manning making practice squad players look like probowl receivers, I don't see them using a high pick on this position.
That brings us to the pick.....
Tyler Sash, Safety, Iowa
The Colts have decided to move on from the talented, but often injured, Bob Sanders. We all have seen how much better the defense is when they had Sanders in the lineup, and quite frankly if I was a Colts fan I do not want to see another game with Aaron Francisco starting at safety.
Tyler Sash started every game for the Hawkeyes the past 2 seasons, and the Colts will like a durable safety. He has played in a 2 deep zone scheme fairly similar to what the Colts run, and I think he can make a quick transition into the starting lineup. Sash appears to be a good leader, and could eventually try to fill the leadership role vacated by Bob Sanders. He has good instincts and reads and reacts quickly which is very important in the scheme that the Colts run. He takes excellent angles to the ball carrier and has pretty good ball skills with 13 career interceptions. He is physical in run support and with some more work in the weight room could become better at shedding blocks and finishing tackles.
