The 2011 Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft continues with FalconMF27 choosing for the Houston Texans At No. 42...

Quick, what do Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Tim Tebow, Bruce Gradkowski, Kerry Collins, James from my flag football team, most of the members of AP, and Al Davis have in common?

They all aren't very good QBs, and could pass for either a few hundred yards, a couple of TDs, or post a 100+ QB rating against the Houston Texans. (Maybe I should have thrown Matt Cassel in that list, but I'm sure we can find another place to argue that)

So to save time and energy explaining and reexplaining the atrociousness that was their secondary, and to not give some AP member the chance to protect their quarterbacking honor, let's just say that the Texans must upgrade the talent in their secondary.

Houston ranked dead last in most of the important pass defense statistics, They have hired former San Francisco 49ers co-secondary coach Vance Joseph, replacing fired David Gibbs, to coach the secondary, and he brings some familiarity of Wade Phillips' defensive system with him. So looking at their secondary roster from last season, they have currently waived starting FS Eugene Wilson and have chosen not to re-sign Bernard Pollard (shocker).

These two safeties were decently strong against the run, but lacked severely against the pass. Starting CBs last season Kareem Jackson and Brice McCain were just plain bad in pass coverage and were regularly abused worse than the Kicker Who Shall Not Be Named and 2.7 here on AP. Jason Allen was acquired in Week 10 of last season and took over the starting role opposite Jackson by Week 11 and did record 3 INTs in 7 games, but was a part of some horrendous games from the secondary the last part of the season.

Looking at the DBs available, I've opted to go with more pass coverage savvy players vs. physical, strong against the run, tacklers, as clearly that didn't work out too well for the Texans in 2010.

They have a young Kareem Jackson going into his 2nd year that they will continue to develop, but he's better suited as a #2 CB, possibly being a candidate to switch to SS, if other CBs get established, due to his aggressive run support and tackling. As of now, he and Jason Allen are the starting CBs, and I guess they could do worse.

So safety it is, and while some might consider this a bit of a reach, this position is so important for the Texans going into 2011 that we'll just call it the "Tyson-Jackson-line-of-thinking" and have the Texans taking:

Rahim Moore, FS UCLA

Moore is a classic ball hawking, centerfield free safety in the mold of his favorite player of all-time, Ed Reed. He's not the strongest of tacklers, nor best at taking on blockers, but he effectively forced opposing offenses to throw away from him in 2010 after a phenomenal 2009 season, in which he led the nation in INTs with 10. His stats did drop in terms of passing defense in 2010, but he upped his game to take on more of a SS/run supporting role and started honing his tackling, jumping his tackles more than 30+ from 2009 to 2010.

He has been scouted as having "questionable instincts", but with coaching and continued improvement in his technique, he may be able to start to resemble his favorite player roaming centerfield for the Texans, and he definitely gives them an improvement in the secondary to back up their highly talented front-7.
