2011 NFL Mock Draft: The Jacksonville Jaguars Select...

The 2011 Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft continues with GenericBrand choosing for the Jacksonville Jaguars at No. 16...

The Jacksonville Jaguars are a tough assignment.

Here's a team that somehow went toe to toe with the Colts last year and were in the hunt to dethrone them all the way up to the final whistle of week 17. They managed to do it with a ton of injuries, a Farmer who moonlights as a QB, and a roster that, at the end of the season, even the most informed football fan(outside of Jacksonville) probably couldn't have named five of their twenty-two starters. Needless to say they have alot of holes to fill and there's alot of ways to approach this first pick.

The Jags have a weak secondary with holes at both safety and cornerback, they have a linenbacking crew that could use a game changer, an offensive line that needs interior help, a QB who seems to be on the chopping block on a yearly basis, and a young wide receiver group that is likely losing one of it's budding stars.

What makes this an even tougher assignment is Gene Smith. The Jags GM is shrewd to say the least. He proved that last year shocking everyone by picking Tyson Alualu with the tenth overall pick. The talking heads had a field day, as Alualu was touted as a second round prospect, and Jag fans kneejerk reaction wasn't exactly excitement. Smith had no second round pick, he found his guy stuck with his pick, and by seasons end had proved everyone wrong with Alualu easily being a top 10 rookie. So it's hard to sit here and think like Gene Smith because he's proven already that he is unconventional.

As Arrowdread would say "can't go wrong with beef", so I'll go with that advice and add to the beef they added last year by picking:

Cal Defensive End Cameron Jordan

If you're scratching you head or quickly going to the "meh" or "disagree" option of the poll, I'm not sure I can blame you. You're probably saying to yourself "he just listed five needs and this pick fills none of them", but here's my best Gene Smith thoughts behind the pick. The Jags do have needs to fill all over the field but they proved last year that, that will not stop them from having a good season. Like the Chiefs their coaching staff had found a way to get the most out of what they had and if it hadn't been for late season injuries to Garrard and MJD we may be talking about the Jacksonville Jaguar AFC South Champs. If you think back to the great Jag teams of the mid-augts, they were all about defense and it started up front in the trenchs.

Cameron Jordan represents the final piece to what could end up becoming one of the most dominating defensive lines in football. Jordan, is a run stuffing machine, who matches up extremely well against right tackles for pass rushing. He would be back lined up next to his former Cal teammate Alualu and opposite a great pass rusher in Kampman. Add to that Terrance "Pot Roast" Knighton in the middle and you have all the pieces you need for a dominating defensive line. Jordan also adds scheme flexibility for the Jaguars as he can line up as an end in their 3-4 sets and can also slide inside as a DT in passing situations. To win the AFC South you need to knock off the Colts and to beat the Colts you have to beat Manning, and the best way to beat Manning is to control the line of scrimmage with your front four.

The consensus over at Big Cat Country is DE although there's no way you would be able to get them to agree on which one. Last year I also picked for this team and had them taking DE Derrick Morgan. There are other more glaring holes but to fill this gap with solidify the most important part of their defense for years to come. The continuity between Jordan and Alualu should speed along his development as well as the fact that he doesn't have the pressure of having to come in and be a dominant pass rusher as he has Kampman opposite him.

If I were to do my best Gene Smith impression here I would've picked Christian Ponder and wouldn't be shocked if that were the pick on April 28th. This team does need a QB and Ponder seems to fit the mold of what Smith would want. He has a need there and really, this fan base needs something to be excited about. But I guess I just don't have the cojones Smith has and am going to stick with my safer pick.

Thanks to all the fans over at BCC who were more then hospitable and helpful.
