The 2011 Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft continues with nmchief choosing for the Washington Redskins at No. 10...
When I saw the schedule for this draft, I felt a little like I had won a prize. I just grabbed the Skins, because they were the highest picking team left when I got to the claims thread. Then the schedule comes out and both of my picks are first thing Monday mornings, so I get three or four days to make my picks and do my write-ups. Then that changed.
Fortunately, I only needed about two minutes to decide on a player once Iam took Dareus off the board (and rightly so... I was starting to think that he would fall to the Chiefs at twenty-one!)
The Skins are easy to pick for this year because, first of all, they suck. This is a team with needs all over the field, so they can hardly screw up a pick. Furthermore, picking at number ten lends itself perfectly to the BPA philosophy. Grab the highest rated player to slip to you, which is liable to be top six or eight talent in the first, and then a first round talent in the second, a second round talent in the third, and so on. Add the fact that if they somehow get a trading period before the draft, they have a couple decent cards to play in McNabb (maybe another two, or at least high three) and even Haynesworthless (maybe Tenn would give a three, or at least high four, to have him back. The Rat has got to be excited for the draft, even if not the season.
As I said, the Skins have needs every where. Perhaps their biggest two are the ones Snyder tried and failed to buy his way out of (and failed miserably) with McNabb and Haynesworth. Grossman is the ranking QB by default, and that doesn't bode well. But with Gabbert and Newton gone, the answer isn't here at number ten. Either a trade (McNabb for Carson Palmer anyone?) or free agent will have to unseat Grossman, or a later pick will have to be developed behind him. Maybe they just ignore the position entirely and enter the Andrew Luck sweepstakes...
Their defense was among the league's worst last year, as the Skins finished thirty-first in total yards allowed and passing yards allowed, and twenty-sixth in rushing yards allowed. They were tied for a slightly less embarrassing twenty-second in points allowed, but that was because it only took twenty-four points to beat them, not because they were really slowing anyone down. It all starts up front, and defensive linemen, both tackle and end, have to be a big priority. The top two tackles are gone, but Cameron Jordan and Robert Quinn are both options with this pick, and nobody would be shocked if either gets the call.
But the Rat is an offensive mind, and that's where I see them going. Offensive line could get the pick (the Skins were twenty-eighth in sacks allowed and thirtieth in rushing yards) but tackle is deep and picking one here would be a reach and not the BPA at all. Running back is the same story, plus Shanahan has a history of picking them late and still getting thousand yard seasons. Which brings us to wideout. The Skins are worse off than the Chiefs in this department. They have a couple of number three/number four guys, but the only starter was Moss, and as a free agent he is almost definitely gone. They are going to be starting two new players in 2011. One will be an over-priced free agent picked by short busser Dan Snyder. I could easily see Breaston in Washington. The other?
With the tenth pick in the 2011 AP mock draft, the Washington Redskins select:
Julio Jones, WR from Alabama
Jones is big (6'4' and 218 lbs) and fast (ran under 4.40 at the combine on a slightly broken foot.) He is a physical receiver who isn't afraid to go across the middle, and blocks well (Alabama was a run-first offense.) He is a durable playmaker and electrifying receiver in the mold of Larry Fitzgerald. Watch out probowl, here comes Julio Jones!
