Nearly Half The League Has Used Franchise Tag

New, comments

The league told the 32 teams last month that the franchise tag would be available from February 10 to 24, which means today is the deadline to franchise a player. Today we've seen a couple of teams apply the franchise tag with only a few hours remaining.

The Chiefs were in on the process in the first week applying the franchise tag to LB Tamba Hali, which wasn't a surprise.

Entering Thursday morning, here are the 11 other players who had been tagged: New York Jets LB David Harris, New England Patriots G Logan Mankins, Pittsburgh Steelers LB LaMarr Woodley, Cleveland Browns K Phil Dawson, Baltimore Ravens DT Haloti Ngata, Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning, Jacksonville Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis, San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick, Minnesota Vikings LB Chad Greenway and Carolina Panthers C Ryan Kalil.

Throughout Thursday, reports have come out that the Miami Dolphins placed the tag on DT Paul Soliai and the Oakland Raiders had used it on LB Kamerion Wimbley.

That would be 14 total players (and Philly used the transition tag on K David Akers). If I can count correctly, that would be five LBs, two QBs, two DTs and one C, G, TE, WR, K.

Another interesting note: 11 come from the AFC and just three from the NFC.
