Another Franchise Tag Could Put A Couple Of Vikings On Open Market

New, comments

We have another franchise tag that's been applied: the Minnesota Vikings will use their franchise tag on LB Chad Greenway.

What this news means is that WR Sidney Rice and DE Ray Edwards will not be applied tags. According to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, the Vikings hope to reach a long-term deal with Rice while Edwards is likely to depart Minnesota.

It's the offseason which means we have a lot of hypothetical situations we talk about. So I'll just go ahead and kick it off -- what about Sidney Rice in Kansas City?

I'm not sure what his cost would be if he were to hit the open market (or if we'll even have an open market) but he's a name that I'm sure folks would be interested in.

He's just 24 years old and was a second round pick in 2007. His real breakout season came in year three when he racked up over 1,300 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. That, if you remember, came with a healthy QB Brett Favre. The following season, last year, he was disappointing as he started the season on PUP with a hip injury. So there's some injury history there to question.

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on a guy like Rice. I'm assuming the Vikings will wrap him up but that hasn't stopped us from speculating before. What are the pros/cons of taking a look at someone like Rice?
