The Kansas City Chiefs have confirmed that OT David Mims has been signed to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. The roster spot came open after the Chiefs released OT Jared Gaither.
Here's the Chiefs' bio blurb on the guy who might become the largest man on the roster (along with Jerrell Powe).
Mims (6-8, 335) spent the first 11 games of the 2011 season on the Chiefs practice squad after entering the NFL as a rookie free agent with the club. He opened 42 games as a four-year starter at Virginia Union, earning All-America honors his final two seasons.
So the Chiefs now have Barry Richardson and Steve Maneri listed on the right side of the depth chart and Brandon Albert on the left side. Mims will fit in somewhere there.
The moves have been made official but I do wonder if there's more to the story. Why was Gaither cut now, just after Week 12? Is this a matter of Gaither doing something bad/wrong/poorly? Or is this an issue of David Mims pushing him?
If Gaither was healthy, it seems there are only a couple of options remaining.
