Back in early January, when the Kansas City Chiefs were on the verge of their NFL playoff game, sports books generally had Kansas City down as 35/1 favorites to win the 2011 Super Bowl (This year's game).
Just under a month later, the Chiefs sit at roughly the same odds to win the 2012 Super Bowl: 30/1.
I'm not much of a gambler so I like looking at odds like this relative to how well the other NFL teams are favored. For a little more perspective, 30/1 puts the Chiefs down as the team with the 14th best odds to win next year's Super Bowl.
The top five teams with the best 2012 Super Bowl odds are the New England Patriots (5/1), Green Bay Packers (6/1), Pittsburgh Steelers (8/1), Baltimore Ravens (12/1), and the New York Jets (12/1). Non-2011 playoff teams that are ahead of the Chiefs in next year's odds include the San Diego Chargers, New York Giants, and the Dallas Cowboys. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tied with the Chiefs at 30/1.
14th best odds to win the Super Bowl? Is that fair? As a fan of logic and as a Chiefs fan, I think the Chiefs need to be sitting at least ahead of the Chargers as far as AFC teams go. I can see how we wouldn't be ahead of some of the NFC teams, considering how much weaker the NFC has generally been this past year.
But the Chargers? As usual, we need to be favored.
