Greg Manusky, Former Chief, May Be Running Chargers Defense

A former Kansas City Chief may now have to root against the Kansas City Chiefs. Greg Manusky, ace special teamer in Kansas City from 1994-99, is expected to be hired by the San Diego Chargers as defensive coordinator, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune who also cautions that the deal isn't quite done yet.

Manusky's been one of the hotter names in this coaching cycle previously interviewing for coordinator positions with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals while also interviewing for the head coaching job with the Carolina Panthers.

Manusky was a linebackers coach in San Diego from 2002-2006 before moving to San Francisco so he has some familiarity with the team.

The big picture news is that he is expected to keep the 3-4 defense in place so San Diego won't be starting over there. I would consider this bad news for the Chiefs because Manusky is a solid choice and a rising star in the league.

If past history is any indication, he may not be there long. Wade Phillips in 2006 went from defensive coordinator in San Diego to head coach (Cowboys) and most recently Ron Rivera left as defensive coordinator to become head coach in Carolina. Maybe in a year or two Manusky will be leaving to join a team.
