On Sunday Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star wrote a story on the Kansas City Chiefs, the heat in St. Joe and Korey Stringer, the former Vikings offensive tackle who died from a heat stroke during training camp. Maybe that sparked (or continued) a discussion at One Arrowhead Drive because the Chiefs just issued a release announcing a change to the club's practice schedule due to the heat.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Sunday that the club has changed its practice schedule for the remainder of training camp because of projected temperatures and heat indexes for the safety of Chiefs players and fans.
Beginning Monday, August 9th, the second practice during regular two-a-day sessions will now begin at 6:00 PM instead of 4:30 PM.
Good call by the Chiefs.
I've been one of those people just standing and watching for a two-hour practice and it's definitely hot. I average over two Gatorades a day on camp days (and I'm not practicing in pads). I saw at least one fan that collapsed and was carried away in an ambulance. Todd Haley has also been taking more breaks and giving the players more water during practice. Many of the players we've heard from have said the Chiefs staff keeps a watchful eye on that.
So for someone who will be out there in the heat (along with many of you), this is good news.
I posted the updated practice schedule for the remainder of camp after the jump.
