Mike McCarthy Highlights Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers Connections

The Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers will meet on Thursday evening for the final preseason game. For a few members of the Packers, a return to Kansas City will be a homecoming of sorts.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was with the Chiefs earlier in his career and Chiefs assistant coach Emmitt Thomas was with Green Bay in the late 90s.

Here are the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers connections courtesy of the Chiefs game release.

  • Packers head coach Mike McCarthy served as an offensive quality control coach (93-94) and QBs coach (95-98) with the Chiefs. He also attended Baker (KS) University and is a member of that school's HOF.
  • Chiefs DBs coach Emmitt Thomas served as defensive coordinator with the Packers (99).
  • Chiefs LS Thomas Gafford and LB John Russell both originally entered the NFL with the Packers.
  • Packes QBs coach Tom Clements (00) and assistant strength and conditioning coach Dave Redding (89-97) worked with the Chiefs.
  • Green Bay Vice President of Football Administration/Player Finance Russ Ball worked with Kansas City (89-98) and at Missouri (82-89).
  • Packers Vice President of Sales and Marketing Tim Connolly spent time with the Chiefs (89-95).
  • Green Bay assistant director of pro personnel Tim Terry (99) and director of player development (96) both attended training camp with Kansas City.
  • Packers college scout Brian Gutekunst was a scouting assistant with the Chiefs (98).
  • Packers TE Tom Crabtree entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Chiefs in 2009.
  • Green Bay WR Jordy Nelson is a native of Manhattan KS and played collegiately at K-State.
  • Kansas City area scout Jim Nagy interned in Green Bay's personnel department (96).
  • Chiefs area scout Ryan Kessenich is a native of Madison, WI.
