Kendrick Lewis ran with the first team safeties at times during the Chiefs OTAs and training camp is expected to go a long way in determining how much he can play in year one.
If you ask a couple of his former coaches, he can play and he can play early.
Terry Lewis, former high school coach:
"The timing for (Lewis) is perfect, " Wilson said. "You could be in a situation with a lot of veteran players, but now the lineup is wide open, so he has a chance to step right in there and do what he does."
Houston Nutt, former college coach:
"He's going to be on time and show up ready to play, " Nutt said. "There are so many ways he can contribute besides in the secondary because of special teams. ... He can do so many things to help your team win."
Both coaches raved about his preparation so that's a good sign for his chances of playing early. Nutt talked about him rallying the troops to get up at 5:30 to work out.
Lewis won't make it easy on incumbent Jon McGraw and I think that's the way Todd Haley and Co. want it.
