Chiefs Special Teams Coach Attends SMU Pro Day

Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach Steve Hoffman attended the SMU pro day, according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com.

At first glance, it's tough to tell who he was there to see.

Brandt reports that 10 players worked out -- five from SMU and five more from smaller schools.

So who was he scouting? An idea after the jump.

Keeping in mind Hoffman is likely there to scout special teams guys, the target could be SMU's Emmanuel Sanders, a receiver who can also return kicks.

Sanders, 5'10" and 181 pounds, is quick running the forty yard dash in the 4.4-4.5 range at the NFL Combine. He didn't run the forty at his pro day but posted solid numbers, Brandt reports.

He posted a 39-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, 10-inch broad jumped. Sanders looked really good in receiving drills and is also an option in the return game.

The Chiefs could be looking for returns in the draft and/or undrafted free agents.

Jamaal Charles has demonstrated some return skills but as his carries increased his time in the role of return man decreased. With Thomas Jones now in the fold, some folks were thinking that might open the door for Charles to see more time at returner.

Sanders is expected to be drafted but in the late rounds.

Reps from the Browns (RB coach) and Eagles (WR coach) attended as well.
