Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star has a nice look at Alabama LB Rolando McClain and the Chiefs fifth pick. After hearing Babb talk on 810 WHB earlier this week, I knew he was thinking McClain to the Chiefs is a real possibility.
So it's no surprise the title of his article is "Alabama linebacker McClain could be a surprise first-round pick for Chiefs".
We all know McClain's credentials at this point and the reasons why he could be the Chiefs pick. Big, tough, familiar defense, leadership. All kinds of descriptions that fit the "right 53".
That said, Babb brings up some concerns that we previously haven't discussed. McClain was involved in a fight his sophomore year, crashed his motorcycle the following year suffering injuries and there are "whispers of other missteps", according to Babb.
Is he a "character risk"?
Babb goes into a little more detail quoting folks close to McClain who suggest otherwise.
I don't foresee something like this being a major problem. Last week Chiefs GM Scott Pioli noted it was important to note the difference between those who continually do the wrong thing versus someone who just made a mistake. Pioli's example was Brandon Meriweather, a safety he drafted while with the Patriots.
