I've always enjoyed reading the stats-based website Football Outsiders, especially after they predicted (before the season started) that the Chiefs would win the AFC West and suggested LB Tamba Hali could surpass Denver Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil in 2010. Clearly these guys know what they're talking about.
Today FO's Aaron Schatz offers up an excellent story on the 2010 Chiefs detailing their No. 1 ranking in DVOA ratings and ends it with something that...well, just read it:
"Now," Schatz writes, "I don't think that the Chiefs are truly the best team in the league, even if they have the best numbers so far. However, the Chiefs need to be taken seriously as a Super Bowl contender."
My first instinct is to say it's too early to be talking about this or even predicting that. in some ways it is. But we're nearly halfway through the season. If the Chiefs are "shockingly effective" in the passing game, as Schatz suggests, then it's possibly if not likely that's who they'll be the rest of the season.
"Right now," Schatz writes, "shocking as it is to say, the Kansas City Chiefs may be the most balanced team in the league."
Check out the full story over at FootballOutsiders.com. it's a good read.
