KC Chiefs vs Broncos: Analyzing Denver's Play Direction Tendencies

Getty Images

This week the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos in a mile high match-up. The Chiefs are coming off a disappointing loss against the Oakland Raiders and are looking to pick up only their second road victory at Denver.

The jury is still out on whether Josh McDaniels is going to be a good head coach. But one thing is for sure...he sure can dial up a great passing attack each week.

Every team in the NFL has strengths and weaknesses, tendencies, and go-to guys. They have plays they like to call during tight situations or directions they like to run when in the middle of the football field.

Let's check out those tendencies.

Broncos Rushing Notes:

  • After looking at the rushing numbers one definite thing can be taken from them...the Broncos need to fix their rushing problems. The Broncos are ranked at the bottom of many of the production ranks when it comes to rushing the ball. The only bright spot it that the Broncos are ranked 16th overall when rushing the ball at their center.
  • The Broncos appear to like rushing the ball toward their young left tackle. Denver has attempted 34 rushing plays his direction (7th most in the NFL).
  • Denver is 29th in rushing attempts in 2010 with 185 rushes.
  • Since Chief's opponents have attacked KC directly at the nose guard 91 times (2nd most in the NFL) expect Denver to do the same. Because of their propensity to pass the ball, also look for Denver to use a few draws.

  • The Denver Broncos have only rushed for 100 yards in a game (as a team) once this year. Believe it or not, that was against the New York Jets.
  • The Broncos have face 2 top ten defenses against the run this year. Still, they only have one 100 yard rushing game. That tells me that the Denver Broncos have some serious issues in the run game.

Broncos Passing Notes:

  • For whatever lack of rushing game the Broncos can generate (or can't generate) they make up for it in the passing game.
  • Denver is 3rd in the NFL in attempts to the short left and 7th to short right.
  • The Broncos have good production numbers when throwing the ball long. Denver is 6th in production when throwing the ball deep left, ranked 8th when throwing deep middle, and ranked 4th in production when throwing the ball deep right. Those are good numbers.
  • In General, the Broncos can pass the ball effectively. Short, Long...they get it around.
  • The Chiefs passing defense is still not to bad despite being ranked ??? in the NFL in yards per game. The left side of the Chiefs secondary (offensive right) is stilled ranked 7th in the NFL in yards surrendered deep or long.
  • Look for the Broncos to have a few answers for the Chiefs coverages. Denver will spread it around and find the holes in KC's secondary. The Chiefs will bend...but will they break?
