The Kansas City Chiefs run game kicked into high gear against the San Francisco 49ers last week.  With an effective passing attack the Chiefs were able to keep the 49ers on their heals enough to loosen up that run defense.

Through the first four weeks of the year the Chiefs are ranked 3rd in the NFL in total rushing yards per game with 160.  That is a big turnaround from the first three games of last year.  Look for the Chiefs to try and get that third ranked running attack going against the Indianapolis Colts.

I have again charted every running play the Kansas City Chiefs have run this year.

Lets take a look...

Chiefs Ground Game Scouting Report vs 49ers:

  • Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles appeared to have some kind of substitution system going during the 49er game.  There was only one series in which both players did not carry the ball.  Sometimes the pattern seemed to be every two, then it would be every other, then 3 and 1 and 3 and 1.
  • Weis appears to be tweaking his tendencies every week with a big change every couple of games.  This makes sense since patterns cannot really be recognized as a confident trend until you get two or three games worth of info.
  • An interesting bit of data (probably trivial but...) is that in the 49ers game Thomas Jones finished every drive off but one, i.e., he got the last carry.
  • If the tendency to have a big tendency change holds true, then look for the Chiefs to come out with something new after the Colts game with only slight tweaks for Indianapolis.

Season Totals Observations:

  • When looking at the run plays chart above it is noticeable that the Chiefs run to the strong side of the formation than the weak side after 3 games.  However, it is a little more complicated than that when taking into consideration that Weis has used Moeaki in motions and shifts.  The Chiefs don't just come out in a run strong look...they might come out in some kind of weak formation and then motion/shift strong for the run.
  • The Chiefs really pounded the weak side in the 49ers game using shifts and motions by Moeaki.
  • After using and being successful with the pulling lineman in the preseason, the Chiefs haven't really used that facet of their game in the regular season as much.  Look for them to go back to that in some game hard and heavy as a nice change up to the running game.

Formation Notes:

  • The Chiefs have gotten some good mileage out of the Pro Strong and Weak formations.  Weis has started to line his players up in different formations and then motion to Pro Weak or Pro Strong with Moeaki.
  • The Chiefs did not run the Pro Strong formation in the 49ers game.  Either by lining up in it or motioning to it.
  • In the 49ers game, Thomas Jones ran the ball 8 times out of 9 from the Pro Weak formation for a total of 43 yards.  Jamaal got one carry from the Pro Weak formation for 20yds.

Formation Notes:

  • The Ace Trey formation utilizes one or two tight ends in the trips formation.  With two tight ends, one being a very good receiver, Weis can either run the ball or throw it with equal effectiveness.
