Haley: No Conversations With Romeo Crennel About Joining Chiefs

We previously pointed out that Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said he talks to free agent coach Romeo Crennel on occasion, but not about joining the Chiefs coaching staff.

Today, Haley was asked directly if he's spoken to Romeo Crennel about joining the Chiefs.

"No."

He said that he doesn't usually speak for GM Scott Pioli, but neither of them have spoken with Crennel regarding a position on the Chiefs staff.

Context is important here because Haley had just spent several minutes talking about another free agent coach, Charlie Weis. That's part of what makes me think Weis is more in play than Crennel.

That said, there are a couple of ways to take this.

The Chiefs currently don't have an offensive coordinator so Haley wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes by talking about Weis. But the Chiefs DO have a defensive coordinator and I think it would be a little inappropriate for him to speculate, or even talk about, hiring a defensive coordinator when Clancy Pendergast is still in the building with that title.

"Romeo is a very good friend of mine that I spent three years with," Haley later said.. "He’s a guy that I’ve always really looked up to and he’s a guy that I’ll talk to periodically throughout the year looking for advice or thoughts just because I think a lot of Romeo as a coach.

"But no conversations in that order."

As for the possibilities of Clancy Pendergast staying on as defensive coordinator?

"I wouldn't rule out anything."
