Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 1/27

Today's Kansas City Chiefs news from across the internet. Does the KC Star even write about the Chiefs in the offseason? It's been a few days. Very sad.

Sometime in the next few days the National Football League is going to release the league’s all-decade team for the 2000s.

To put together this all-star team of the decade, the league asked the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Selectors to come up with the team. Voting was held last month, with the league asking for multiple selections at each position.

In the last three decades, the Chiefs had five players selected to an all-decade team:

  • 1990s – LB Derrick Thomas and DE Neil Smith.
  • 1980s – FS Deron Cherry.
  • 1970s – LB Bobby Bell and P Jerrel Wilson.

When asked how many NFL players play Madden, he replied, "Everybody." And it's not only played for fun, some players and coaches have been using the videogame to memorize playbooks or practice recognizing defenses.

"These games nowadays are just so technically sound that they're a learning tool," said Tim Grunhard, who was on the Kansas City Chiefs in the 90s and is now a high school coach. "Back when I was playing football, we didn't realize what a near or a far formation was, we didn't really understand what trips meant, we didn't understand what cover 2, cover 3, and cover zero meant."

I don't know what those are either, but the fact that I could if I played Madden means that gamers have a complex set of real football strategy at their fingertips. NFL players who play Madden have more situational awareness than previous generations because they have such a complex simulation tool available to them. Plus, it's fun.

Brown said he’s been working for four solid hours each day after classes with former teammates and Troy strength and conditioning coach Richard Shaughnessy, who is well-respected among NFL personnel for preparing Trojans for the next level. Among the 2008 Trojan seniors, four were on NFL rosters the entire season — Sherrod Martin (Carolina Panthers), Steve McLendon (Pittsburgh Steelers), Trevor Ford (Green Bay Packers) and Dion Gales (Kansas City Chiefs).
