There's been an interesting development in the introduction of Romeo Crennel to the Kansas City Chiefs defensive coaching staff.
First some background. Yesterday, Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reported that the Chiefs were "in the process of firing Clancy Pendergast", who of course was the defensive coordinator last season. Adam Schefter of ESPN also reported that the Chiefs had "terminated the contract" of Pendergast.
During Crennel's introduction teleconference moments ago, Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said, "Clancy is part of this staff....I want Clancy part of this staff."
Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star also tells us that Pendergast "will be coaching a position but wouldn't specify which." Babb later said Haley indicated it would likely be as a defensive backs coach.
Interestingly, Nick Wright of 610 Sports said yesterday Pendergast is not expected to be fired and then the national guys (LaCanfora and Schefter) came in and said otherwise. (Ed. Note: Pendergast definitely doesn't appear that he'll be "fired" so Wright got it, uh, right.) This thing isn't done though. From what I can gather, Haley wasn't completely sure if Pendergast would be back.
I guess we'll soon find out but Haley wants Clancy on his staff in some sort of role.
