Did the Chiefs Cut QB Ingle Martin to Make Room for Tyson Jackson?

We have one little tidbit to go one with this but it's from a good source: Soren Petro and The Program's Twitter feed.

Ingle Martin not at evening practice. Speculation is he may have been cut to make room for Tyson Jackson to be signed.

And now we've got confirmation of Ingle's departure from Bob Gretz over at CBS Sports:

The Chiefs have waived QB Ingle Martin. He was the team's No. 4 QB. That leaves Matt Cassel, Tyler Thigpen and Brodie Croyle.

Martin remains on the roster but this info is solid. With 81 players on the roster (with Martin still on it), a cut would bring it down to the league mandated 80 players if Jackson signed. Jackson currently does not count against that roster limit. The Chiefs would have to cut a player if they did indeed sign Jackson.

Now for those of you thinking that these cuts don't happen that abruptly - like a guy would be in the AM but not the PM practice - remember that K Connor Barth was literally packed up and ready to go to camp before he knew he was going to be let go.

Thoughts on Martin's departure? Are the Chiefs getting ready to announce the signing of their #1 draft pick?

H/T to Reno_Chief.

Update: 7:54 PM Gretz chimes in at his own blog:

Although there’s no indication that negotiations between the Chiefs and No. 1 draft choice Tyson Jackson have reached a point where a deal  is close to being done, one can speculate that the release of Martin was to create a roster spot for a signed Jackson.

Come on #3 overall pick....
