VIDEO: Todd Haley on Switching to the 3-4 Defense: 'It was a no-brainer'

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley did his usual media routine after practice today. He touched on quite a few different topics. The UW-RF site has quotes and the mothership has the full transcript.

Here's a few good ones from the UW-RF site:

On doing situation specific drills...

"You can’t coach [situations] enough. I don’t think so at least." When asked if he would continue to run situation drills during the regular season, Haley said, "A Friday or Saturday walk-thru would be when we’d work on these situation things."

On Bernard Pollard yacking it up with the offense during drills...

There "always seems to be one mouthy player," but [Haley] wasn’t worried about Pollard’s attitude.

On August 15th's scrimmage with the Houston Texans 8th's inner-squad scrimmage...

Haley said that it would be "a controlled scrimmage" in which his team would get to work on "more situations."

On the switch to a 3-4 defense...

"It just creates a whole slew of problems and schematic issues," he said. Haley said the 3-4 is what his coaching staff knew best, and what he was most familiar with himself. "For me, it was a no-brainer to go with it," he said.

And we've got a few more notes from the mothership after the jump...

On Larry Johnson getting fewer reps today...

"Yeah. It’s all part of a rotation and you’ll see that throughout camp and the pre-season. We may want to see somebody else more and somebody will get a couple of reps off, or we may be resting him. It could be a number of different reasons."

On prepping the offensive tackles to face the 3-4...

"It’s tough on the tackles, not only from the physical standpoint since sometimes those outside backers are the Derrick Thomas’ and the best rushers around. But the identification of the defense really becomes the tough thing across the board as an offensive lineman. A guy can move six inches and it changes who he’s blocking. I like the training camp option of just preparing against the three-four defense as an offensive every day. I’ve had to do it, or been part of offenses that had to do that all through training camp and pre-season and I think it’s been good."

The full transcript is at the mothership.
