Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bay

ChiefsFan90s with the pick...

I have talked to a lot of Giants’ fans, and others. Through these conversations; it was brought to my attention two things.

First, under Jerry Reese, the Giants have drafted for need at the draft; not for the best player available.

Secondly, the Giants top two needs are WR and LB. My mind was set on one of for LBs before a couple of days, Brian Cushing being my first choice, followed by Clay Matthews, then James Laurinitis, and Larry English if the other three were already taken. If they were gone, it was going to be Larry English. However after my top 3 choices were grabbed up, and I started to do some research on English, and Darrius Heyward-Bey. From my conclusion, they both fit the needs at both positions well, but after seeing Toomer was gone for good, with the legal problems Plax is having, the Giants going down hill last year after Plax left, and with none of their other young WRs stepping up, as of yet; receiver is a bigger need for the Giants than linebacker, where they have Michael Boley, Antonio Pierce, and Mathias Kiwanuka. Plus English is better suited for the 3-4 defense as a DE, anyways.

Even though there is a chance of stud WR Plaxico Burgess coming back to the Giants next year. Jerry Reese has to assume the worse will come, and he will never be in the NFL again. While Amani Toomer must assume the worse, as well, with the Giants not resigning him. So who will be the Giants starting WRs this year? Derek Hagan? Domenik Hixon? Mario Manningham? Sinorice Moss? Steve Smith, (The less famous one.)? Maybe for the #2 WR spot, but not as the #1.

While the Plax situation is going on; the Giants draft Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey to replace Plax as Eli Manning’s #1 receiver, or as Manning’s future #1 receiver, if Burress can get himself out of trouble which does not seem like the case.

Darrius numbers were not all that great at Maryland, and offense that did not do a lot on offense, but that has not stopped him from being a 1st Round talent. (Stats in College at Maryland) He has good size at 6’3” and 206 pounds, ran scouts away with his fast speed of 4.29 at the 2009 NFL Combine, and great strength benching 16 at the Combine, though. He needs to work on his route-running, consistency, and will sometimes have mental lapses, if he is going to be forced into the Giants’ starting lineup, but with the Giants true identity being a running team; he will be fine.
