Trent or Brodie?

Knowing what we do now, is this question still difficult for many of us to answer?

Trent, 38 years old, is currently with St. Louis Rams.  He may be old in NFL years but he doesn't have the mileage on him that many others do.

Brodie has struggled as a starting quarterback, but is anyone ready to give up on him?

Knowing what I know now, I would rather have Trent Green still on the team.  Concussed or not, I believe he gives us a better chance to win than Croyle.

But, I'm starting to learn better than that because no Croyle means we are back where we started.  Back where we have been for the last 2 decades.

Is there any scenario in which you would rather have Trent versus Brodie?

Napoleon Harris Surprised By Speculation About His Job Status

Kansas City Chiefs middle linebacker Napoleon Harris has been startled by the speculation that he may not be a part of the starting squad in 2008 .  Judging by the fact that he was the team's leading tackler last year, he has good reason to be surprised by recent media reports indicating he's out in the middle.  But, as it currently stands, he is the starting middle linebacker for the team, at least according to the coaches.

"Coaches tell me one thing, I read another," said Harris.  KC Star reporter Jeffrey Flanagan even received an e-mail from someone claiming to be Harris expressing concern over the Demorrio Williams signing.  Harris, though, claims that e-mail didn't come from him.  "It might have been my brother — he does that stuff. I don’t know."

He might be the victim of Herm Edwards movement to completely overhaul the roster after a pathetic 4-12 campaign in 2007.  Or the criticism might be valid.

One theory has Williams occupying one of the outside spots with Donnie Edwards moving to the middle.  Harris is convinced that, even though he led the team with 123 tackles last year, all the speculation is "last year's news."

So, will our starting LB crew look like Williams, Edwards, Johnson or Edwards, Harris, Johnson?

Rookie Pay Scale

It's my contention that the NFL should go to a rookie pay scale similar to the NBA where each player's contract is determined by their draft order.  #1 overall gets X amount of money, #2 gets Y amount of money, etc.  All contracts are pre-determined.  If you don't like it?  Then don't play.  The incoming rookies need the league more than the league needs them.

It seems to work well in the NBA, as rookies aren't given outrageous contracts as has become the norm with the top 10 in the NFL draft.

It makes no sense as to why the league wouldn't slot the rookie pay like the NBA.  The only players that could conceivably be opposed to the idea would be the incoming rookies.  Who have no vote in matters regarding the NFLPA and the NFL by-laws.

Of the $8 billion in revenue created by the league each year, 59.25% (or about $4.5 billion) has to go to player costs.  That money has to be spent per the current CBA.

So, if the rookie pay is cut then teams will be left with a surplus of money that has to be spent.  And if that money is not going to the rookies then it's going to the veterans.  Those who actually vote in matters regarding the NFLPA and the NFL by-laws.

So, my question to everyone is: Why in the world hasn't the NFL slotted it's rookie pay scale like the NBA?  It's a situation I've researched a bit and can't understand the reasoning behind it.

The only possible scenario I have come up with is that NFL agents are somehow against this and used their influence to deter the league from considering this (but, as CAA agent Ben Dogra would tell you, agents have no influence).  But many of these agents represent veterans as well, and they would be benefiting as well.  So the agents wouldn't be losing money.

So, again I ask, what's the deal?

Is Glenn Dorsey worth it?

After reviewing the contract recently signed by Matt Ryan, I'm again becoming worried about Glenn Dorsey and the contract he'll sign.

If he is a bust, we're screwed.  Big time.  It would devastating to the defense (and front office...another DT bust) if Dorsey didn't work out and was still collecting a huge paycheck.

Even if he does work out, then we're paying someone $7-10 million/year.  Didn't we balk at paying Jared Allen $10 million/year?  Why is Dorsey any different?

Top 10 picks have a massive bust-rate.  I never liked being in the top 10 and I still don't.  If I could go back and do it all over I would trade down again.  Call me conservative, but I'm not ready to lay my future on a guy whose never played a down in the NFL.  Mark my words, if Dorsey doesn't work out then we aren't getting out of this little rut we've been in for a long time.

New Rule Limiting Roster Size Hurts Kansas City Chiefs

The elimination of NFL Europe resulted in a rule change limiting the amount of players that can be invited to training camp.

NFL Europe provided roster exemptions for teams during training camp.  These exemptions would allow teams to carry rosters with 90+ players to training camp.  This extra roster space allowed teams to carry multiple kickers, punters and even long snappers.

For a team like the Kansas City Chiefs with a lot of holes to fill, this training camp roster reduction will hurt.

The talent pool that will be affected the most by this is undrafted free agents.  Teams sign anywhere from 5 to 25 UDFAs in hopes that they'll find a diamond in the rough.  Players like Priest Holmes of Tyron Brackenridge may have never been given the opportunity to compete for a spot if the team were to have to cut certain positions on the training camp roster.

The NFL's new numbers game limits the talent pool available to teams, thus downgrading the level of overall talent in the league.  Why doesn't the NFL want to give teams a better chance at putting the best possible product on the field?

These UDFAs generally go from team to team, providing depth but also providing fresh bodies during practice.  If a team now has to carry one less wide receiver, then that's valuable rest time taken away from a veteran during camp.  And withdrawing down time for veterans during camp can only increase injuries.

And the cycle continues.  A few more bumps and bruises to the veterans will necessitate more depth as the season goes on.  But, in certain situations, (because of this rule) that depth simply isn't there.

This is causing certain coaches to change the way they conduct practices.  Limiting the talent pool doesn't make sense from any stand point.

Lofa Tatupu Allegedly Arrested For DUI

I can't find many details on this yet.  There's no confirmation so it's just a rumor at this point, but apparently Lofa was arrested on a DUI .

He apparently blew a .15.

This would be a pretty terrible situation.  Goodell is getting rough on players who are violating rules.  Especially rules that have a system in place where they should never happen.  Teams have drivers available to all the players.  Maybe it's just something I will never understand.

Anyone else have anymore details about the arrest?

The Southern Methodist University athletics department announced that Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt was inducted into the inaugural class of the Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday.

Hunt, who died Dec. 13, 2006, of prostate cancer, was a three-year reserve end on the SMU football team, but largely is being inducted for his contributions after his days on the Dallas campus.
