Mr. Allen and about two dozen Western athletes helped provide security at the Chiefs’ practice held at the St. Joseph campus on Thursday. Despite an overcast sky and forecasts of rain, as many as 4,000 to 5,000 local fans turned out to get a personal take on the Chiefs. "I tell you, I just want to shake somebody’s hand, see that they’re not stuck up," Mr. Allen said. "That’s all I want to see."

"We are not taking any money from the Chiefs," Williams said. "This is something Western has chosen to do for the community, to give fans a greater connection and an opportunity to see the team in a more intimate venue." Western nonetheless hopes to make some gains from the exposure. The school gave away 8,000 tickets, and Williams said he hopes to get at least 6,000 people into Spratt Stadium for the day. At least some of those people probably never have been to a Western sporting event.

"When I was playing, everyone's emphasis was on stopping the run," he said. "When I wasn't back there, all hell broke loose. People could blitz and dare us to complete a pass down the field. And, we lost a little excitement. I like to rant and rave on the sideline, get people pumped up. It was like everyone was down and just trying to get through the season. "It was hurtful to watch them struggle like that and not be able to help them. I tried to rush to get back, but it didn't work out."
