What Oakland's big spending means (Bill Williamson)

Excerpt: It is very clear who the Raiders – who had 26 potential free agents, the second most in the league -- have decided are their top priorities. The Raiders will be in great shape if they can keep all of these players, but it won’t be easy. It will especially not be easy to keep star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Until he signs with another team, I still won’t be surprised if Asomugha comes back to Oakland. But Thursday for the first time, I began to think Asomugha very well could leave Oakland. The Raiders aren’t giving him any choices. In the past week, Oakland gave more than $42 million to three players for 2011. What’s going to be left for Asomugha? He is expected to be the biggest free-agent prize in football.

Sources: Tom Cable fined $120K by Oakland Raiders in 2010 - ESPN

"As former Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable was attempting to lead his team to the playoffs, owner Al Davis began deducting $20,000 from each of his head coach’s paychecks until he had withheld $120,000 in fines, according to team sources. In turn, Cable filed a grievance against his owner with the NFL, becoming the latest Raiders head coach to be embroiled in a financial dispute with his owner. Now NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will appoint an arbitrator to whom the Raiders and Cable will have to submit legal arguments and witnesses. The arbitrator then will make the final ruling."

"Probably the funniest thing, I was pretty close to Lane Kiffin…and after they fired Lane and were about to announce who the next coach was - I don’t know if you guys saw this in the media world, but I was actually sitting there live, me and a couple other players there in the back. And [Davis] went through this whole spiel of what happened…and said our next coach is Tom Cable, he’s going to be our interim coach. When everybody paused for Tom to come in, like a breakoff. [Davis] goes to the media guide and not even whispering says ‘hey, anyone got any information on this Tom Cable guy, I don’t know where he comes from.’ That’s just vintage Al Davis. Making a move, not really knowing why, no real justification for doing it. But just saying, ‘hey, I want this guy, let’s get him, I’ll figure everything else out later.’ And that’s just how Al Davis is."
