Dunno where to post this...
a lot is made about "filling the needs", or "best player available".  What the draft really comes down to is extracting maximum value.  Jared Allen (f'rex) didn't go in the first round.  Would he be a "reach"?  Of course not.  Anyone with a clue would have grabbed him in the first round, in retrospect.  Nor is he alone.

My point being, that neither BPA, nor :greatest need" really apply.

If a team cannot develop a player, and put him on the field, the pick is a loss, as surely as if they draft a loser.  The laundry list of teams who grabbed gems lat and those who busted early is long indeed. There's also a nice list of teams which traded away "BPA" or "Fill the need", and came away a winner.

The moral of the story?  The Ciefs need to get their money's worth from this draft.  If they can get a QB who can replace Croyle at #5, god eough - there's a a time frame for that.  If all they do is train a QB for the Raiders/Broncos, etc, theyve wasted a pick.

Additional point: buth BPA, and FTN are blind alleys.  Any team needs to maximise the value of their draft.  The laundry list of aver-hyped 1syt round picks is only superceded by the list of late-rounders and UFAs.  The number of those only go to show how difficult the draft can be.  It's a pity that the Chiefs don't have a long track record of passing over busts, and making succesful "reaches", since that would be the shining example of success.  Oh, well.

Over hyped 1st rounders
I'm always very, very cautious of players like Vernon Gholston whose stock soared from mid 1st round before the Combine to now people argue he could be #1 overall?

And what about Trevor Laws, DT out of Notre Dame?  He had something like over 100 tackles last year (apply "non-stop motor" draft buzz word here") but because his measurables aren't ideal he's a 3rd rounder.

Teams put more thought and time into these selections than I think we'll ever know.  Remember, at the end of the day this is a business.  And just like any business they are trying to get the most bang for their buck.

I think the Chiefs understand and attempt to do what you are saying, but it's probably easier said than done.  Not one person in the NFL predicted Jared Allen would be so successful.

Opposite way too
After the NCAA title game Dorsey was the consummate #1 overall.  He hasn't played a down since then and now his stock is dropping.

BPA
is only preferred because it prevents you from reaching, from saying to yourself "we must fill this position, and it must come from this round" - you're right about getting the player on the field, something I think Herm has done a good job of.  Maybe replacing Sammy Knight and Wesley with Page and Pollard wasn't the "best" move that first season, but it's going to pay out big dividends over the next few years (I really expect Pollard to break out this season and justify himself as a 2nd rounder)
