The Giants are smart enough to realize that it's defense that's going to get them back to the Super Bowl. And in picking Jerod Mayo, I chose the best defensive player available. Kawika Mitchell, who spent only last season with the Giants, bolted to Buffalo this off season for a bigger contract.

The Giants have a high number of linebackers currently on the roster but relatively few of them have the experience or the skill to start in the NFL. Jerod Mayo is widely considered the second best linebacker behind USC's Keith Rivers and many mocks have Mayo going late in the first round. Draft Tek has Mayo going at #36, with his value at that spot off the charts. The Giants fill a need with this pick and don't reach.
