Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft -- Pick #4 by the Oakland Raiders

And with the #4 overall pick in the 2008 Arrowhead Pride Community Mock Draft, the Oakland Raiders select:

Virginia DE Chris Long

Bio

DJ with the pick.

There is no way Al Davis could pass on bringing in a second generation Raider to remind the fans of the glory years. Howie Longs son shares many of the characteristics of his father and is the best DE prospect in the draft. He will line up opposite of 2 time pro bowler Derrick Burgess who registered 8 sacks last year and provide a fearsome pass rushing duo to further strengthen Oaklands ascending defense. A good pass rush in combination with DeAngelo Hall and Nnamdi Asomugha at the CB positions will make passing against the Raiders a dangerous proposition.

1. Miami Dolphins - QB Matt Ryan
2. St. Louis Rams - OT Jake Long
3. Atlanta Falcons - DT Glenn Dorsey
4. Oakland Raiders - DE Chris Long

On the clock: Kansas City Chiefs (Tom Bahali)

Anyone else a little scared?
If the draft were to pan out this way, Oaklands D, which is already pretty impressive, becomes even better.  Dare I say, I might be worried about playing the Raiders next year?

Thought that
But haven't said that out loud. I'd much rather have the Raider's young guys now than the Chiefs, with the exception of Jared Allen.

Raiders Young Players Better, But...
They're going to be a mess for the next couple of years because of cap space.  And that Javon Walker deal is going to absolutely sink them if his knees are shot.

Apparently, they're also already $20+ million or so over the cap already...before the draft even kicks off...which means that somebody big (or several somebodies) is going to have to go.

Here's their cap information so far:

For some reason
I don't see where they are over from this link.  Can anyone help me?  Also - nice to see we are second to last in payroll?

Actually...
...I take that back...after doing a little more digging apparently because the contracts Davis has done up are heavily backloaded, the Raiders are something like $4.6 million under the salary cap right now.  Which is probably enough to sign their top draft pick this year to another backloaded deal and for Davis to feel like he can make a Super Bowl push this year (which is a lot of ifs considering that their QB is basically a rookie and their top WR might be unable to play).  But the Raiders are going to be in some serious cap trouble in 2009 and 2010, so it's very possible that some of those promising young players will be making their way to the free agent market in the next couple of years...which is good if we can get a GM who can actually sign some of them.

what about their other picks?
I realize they traded some of them away, but if they put pretty much all that they have remaining towards their top pick, how are they going to afford the other guys they draft?

i think they only have 3 picks
they've traded away the rest of them.

Its important to check that out
The year by year salary for each player.  Many of the performance bonuses and salaries on the tail end of the contract are not achievable and very likely that the team will cut them before then.

For example, Nate Clements supposedly signed 8-years, $80 million last year but really it turned out to be more like $66 million once you took out the crazy, unachievable bonuses.

Bonus such as:
Ok if your college team wins the National Championship in Basketball, Football and the College World Series in the same year between the years 2008 and 2009 and have the same guy who is quarterback, starting pitcher and starting power forward for those teams with a naturally red headed girfriend who is fluent in Chinese, Bohemian and Alaskan with a British accent and stands only 5"2" and has a foot fetish for athletes who refuse to bath, and gets selected as the Celebrity Apprentice by Donald Trump, then you will get the $12 million dollar bonus.

Whew that took alot of work!

Raiders picks
One site said they only had one pick in the first three rounds.  Guess the Raiders won't be trading down...they're going for it all this year.

God, it's going to be fun to watch that fire sale next year.  I sure wouldn't mind seeing the Chiefs get ahold of Michael Huff, or Asomougha, or maybe even DeAngelo Hall once they get cut.

I wonder if
Fabian Washington will be cut/traded now that they have Hall.  I'd love to have him in KC and he's only 24.

Depends...
...if the Raiders are actually under the cap this year and won't go over by signing their top draft pick, I don't know why they'd cut him.  He's young, fast and he's depth.  Next year though, looks like somebody is going to have to go.

Courtesy of Thoughts from the Dark Side
State of the Raider Defense:

Cornerback:

On the roster: Nnamdi Asomugha, DeAngelo Hall, Fabian Washington, Stanford B-School-Isnt-What-It-Used-To-Be Routt, John Bowie, and Chris Johnson

Farewell: Very likely Chris Carr

Outlook: This unit looks to be one of the best in the league. Asomugha and Hall are both elite corners. Likely either Washington or Routt will be gone, but that will leave one of them as a very quality nickleback.

Moves: Either Routt or Washington will likely be gone
