Morning Update (Future Chop Blocker Edition)

  • We'll find out this morning if Casey Wiegmann is going to be a Denver Bronco next season. Wiegmann left Denver yesterday and is back in Kansas City, discussing the proposal with his family.

  • Somebody's excited about Mike Solari.

  • I really get the feeling like Herm Edwards loves going to Pro Days. It's definitely his element.

  • Picking winners for your bracket, by the numbers.

  • This site quickly became one of my morning stops each day -- East Coast Sports News.

  • Excellent read from CE Wendler -- "The lesson to be learned? High-priced NFL cornerbacks are overrated commodities, unless their name is Deion Sanders." I'm sure primetime 07 agrees.

  • Will Atlanta draft Darren McFadden? Apparently not.
Anyone else scrambling to get their bracket together this morning? I used to be so much better at this!

Three #1 seeds in the finals...check...take KU out early to take advantage of all of the KU homers in my group...check...one #12 over a #5 seed...check...Oh man this bracket is going to be terrible.

I do agree
$10 mill/year can be spent in better places than on one guy that won't get the ball thrown to him much.  It's all about who you've got on the other side as well.

I also agree.
If you only have one high priced corner and a crappy second one it does no good.  Now if you have two high priced good corners then its money well spent.

Which really makes me wonder
How the Raiders are going to be this year. They do have two good corners.

Solari's a good pickup, Raiders will suck
The biggest problem for the Seahawks last year was their offensive line couldn't open holes.  Although that had a lot to do with losing Steve Hutchinson, I think Solari's proven he can squeeze good performances out of offensive linemen when possible...assuming he's the line coach and not the offensive coordinator, of course.

As for how the Raiders are going to be, I think their defense will be improved if the Hall trade goes through and they draft a quality DT or DE (assuming they don't have to cut any key performers to get under the cap), and their offense will suck (first year starter at QB, high-paid WR with a spaghetti knee, talented but fragile RB...it's going to be a mess).  Based on the large number of big (sometimes insane) contracts they handed out, I suspect that any improvement the Raiders have this year will also be offset by a descent into salary cap hell the year after (especially after they cut Fabian Washington, possibly Michael Huff and especially if they end up having to cut Javon Walker because his knee is done).

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

However...
I do agree on the overpaid corners comment, but when you truly do have a shutdown corner ala Champ Bailey or even Rashied Mathis in my mind, it lets you do so much more with your defense. Herm won't care because he is a tampa 2 guy 'til the grave, but I'm sure Gun would love to get his hands on a true shutdown corner because although suttle, the difference is huge.

P.S. please someone slip in the longhorns for me on their bracket...you never know! a.j. abrahams could take them all the way!
