If Jake Long is gone
Who are you thinking about taking?

DJ
This would have been good for you to do, you do a real good job with the research. No offense to anyone else though.

DJ
is kinda turning into our resident o-line expert.  At least from some diaries recently.

3rdandlong, do us proud!

I'm flattered
If Long is there I think you have to take him since it frees us up in later rounds.  If J. Long is gone, I'd go with Dorsey or Ellis to shore up our defense.

2nd round you almost HAVE to take an OT.  I like Nicks or Cherilus.

by DJ on Mar 14, 2008 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can't remember where
But I read that Nicks stock was falling because of his little incident with an out of control party at his house. Him dropping would be great for us.

Carl Nicks
Just an FYI...I am in Nebraska and the party Nicks was at was just a disturbance call.  The party was out of control, but he really didn't have a lot to do with it.  However, the idea that he is putting himself in these positions questions his character.

Also, he quit going to class last year once the Huskers were out of bowl contention.  He also went home to California the year before during a weekend practice against the coaches' orders.

My thoughts
I'm no fool, but here are some quick thoughts.

A-If Long is available...he won't be after we pick.

B-If Long ISN'T available...go 2 ways. Either A-Take Ellis from USC, or McFadden. I've been thinking about it; Why not draft McFadden with the intent of either trading him OR LJ for picks & o-linemen by the end of the draft? Am I the only one that thinks that'd be remininiscent of what the Chargers did with Eli? Am I the only one who thinks that if we draft McFadden, he'd be coming into his prime when we have finally built around him or if we stick w/ LJ, he'd be at the tail-end of his prime when we're done rebuilding?

Other thoughts:

I want a QB in round 2 or 3, and I like Flacco or Johnson from USD

One of my favorite O-Line prospects is Jeff Otah from Pitt. I might think about trading up to snag him at the end of round 1, even if we get Long.

I too am in love with Martin Rucker and Jordy Nelson.

There will be a corner, at least 1 corner taken, in the first four rounds but I'd just as soon taken another quality pass rusher to get the same result.

Please, give me your thoughts!!! I carry the weight of Arrowhead Nation on my shoulders!

Otah is good
But we're not trading Larry Johnson! The cap hit is too big!!

Welcome by the way!

I don't think we could take McFadden
The idea of two of the highest paid players on your team splitting time turns my stomach.  LJ can't be traded for another 3 or so years because the cap hit would destroy us.

I don't like the idea of getting a QB sooner than the 4th round.

There are a couple of positions we HAVE to address within the first 3 rounds IMO.  OT & CB.  If you can't get J. Long in the 1st round, there are no other linemen worth that high a pick.  So say you take Ellis or Dorsey which are fantastic choices, but then it kind of pigeon holes you into taking an OT in the second and CB in the third.  After that we have all kinds of wiggle room to get extra linemen and a backup QB.

I've seen a few mocks
with us taking John David Booty in the 4th or 5th round.

by Chris Thorman on Mar 14, 2008 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Small Hands
I've heard Booty has really small hands and that scouts are concerned it could lead to alot of fumbles, especially in bad weather.

I like the idea
but it just can't/won't work out.

If we draft McFadden then LJ's already low stock takes an even bigger hit because teams know we have to trade him.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 14, 2008 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Following Up
I wasn't assuming that by drafting McFadden we then have to trade LJ; Rather, draft McFadden and hold him as bait to teams to get extra players/picks (Imagine drafting McFadden and trading him to Dallas for a young offensive OL and a late 1st and 3rd?) But, seems like people aren't liking that idea.

A corner that stuck out to me is Justin King from Penn State. I'm liking him as a corner and return-specialist. I'd like him a lot in round 3.

If our Michigan Man is gone, it'll either be Ellis or Dorsey, and if they're both available I'd take Ellis. That being said, if Long is gone I really think the Chiefs need to get either Otah or Clady. Either trade down and get more picks along with one of them OR take the #5 pick and then trade up to get one of those 2. Either Long, Clady, or Otah should be on our line next year.

Thanks for the input guys keep on pouring it on.

drafting McFadden
"Rather, draft McFadden and hold him as bait to teams to get extra players/picks (Imagine drafting McFadden and trading him to Dallas for a young offensive OL and a late 1st and 3rd?)"

That's taking an enormous risk drafting a guy in the hopes that you will find a partner later to trade for.

This is an extremely important draft and its crucial we get players that will fill holes and be able to contribute immediately.

McFadden is a great player and I would love to have him BUT with LJ, there isn't room for another back of that salary amount and you'd be splitting carries between two great players meaning they are half as effective as they could be on their own.

If Dallas wants to work out a deal to take the #5 spot to draft McFadden then fine, but once we draft him, the position of power shifts from the Chiefs to whoever we are trading to because other teams will know that if we don't trade, we're going to be stuck with him.

Worked for San Diego
I just remember a similar situation worked for San Diego a few years back. They drafted a guy they never intended on signing (Eli) and got their man (Rivers) and an add'l pick, which I think they used on Luis Castillo. Seemed to worked alright for them.

Difference is
You were talking about a guy that was perceived to be a legitimate franchise QB, brother of Peyton Manning.  A franchise QB, if he works out, will be the centerpiece and leader of your team for the next 10-15 years. He also touches the ball every single play.

Also, had they not traded Eli and Eli refused to play for them, they would have been compensated for the pick the next year.

McFadden could be a great running back, but that isn't the same and isn't as valuable as a franchise QB.  There is no indication McFadden would refuse to play for the Chiefs, which means if we can't find a trade partner, we're "stuck" with him.

I'm not saying a trade couldn't happen.  I'm just saying it would be an extremely risky move to make if the Chiefs aren't legitimately interested in keeping him if a trade doesn't go through.
