Chiefs Sign Former Ravens WR Devard Darling

From the diaries. --Chris

From Adam Teicher:

Former Baltimore wide receiver Devard Darling agreed to terms of a three-year contract with the Chiefs today.

Darling, who will be 26 next month, played four seasons with the Ravens, mostly as a reserve. He caught a total of 20 passes. Eighteen of those catches came last season, when he also scored three touchdowns.

Darling, who played in college at Washington State, was a third-round pick by the Ravens in 2004.

Interesting note about Darling
Darling attended Florida State University until the death of his identical twin brother, Devaughn Darling. After his brother died of complications possibly tied to sickle cell trait, FSU doctors would not clear him medically to return to the football team. He subsequently transferred to Washington State University, and finished his spectacular career with 105 receptions for 1630 yards (15.7 yards per rec. avg.) and 30 receiving touchdowns.

Samie Parker with potential?

Also
He's 6'1", 215 pounds.

3rd round pick.

He wants to be a starter, which is seemingly why he came to the Chiefs.

More
The Bahamas had a "Devard Darling Day" when he was drafted. Darling is originally from the Bahamas.

I like this signing. Not too expensive. Darling is young, good sized and supposed to be fast.

As do I
he isn't to expensive, and definetly has the potential I think to possibly become an above average reciever in the NFL at the least. I just texted my friend whos a baltimore fan to see what he thinks of him.

Ok here are his exact words from the text message:
"d squared is garbage. Hes had a couple decewnt games and still has potential though"

Thanks Michael!

Haha not the most optimistic view, but atleast the word potential made its way in there. He actually just sent another message saying:

"Really hes actually not too bad anbd might be half decent in their offense"

SO thats about the extent of my knowledge on him besides the 2 games I have probably seen him play in. This is a classic Herm signing obvioulsy.

having lived in the b'more area
for the past couple years, I've been a pretty close witness to the wasting of Darling's potential underneath the watchful eye of "offensive genius" Brian Billick.  He was always one of those guys I'd draft in fantasy thinking, "this is his breakout year," only to watch guys like Steve McNair and clowns like Kyle Boller skip passes off the turf in front of him all season long.

I had no idea he was on KC's radar, but I like this pickup a ton.  Hopefully Brodie can get him the ball.  I'll definitely be rooting for him.

Darling
This is exactly the kind of guy Herm said they were going to go after.  An unknown guy that was sitting on the bench on another team.

Nothing to get real excited about, but looks like he's going to be given a chance to show what he can do.

Anyone know if he did kick & punt returns in college?

Double D
My two favorite letters together, what a combo! Big target, now can he hold onto the ball? Can we get Brodie enough time to deliver the ball? It does not matter who our recievers are if the QB is flat on his back.

stallion dallion is the winner for me...
that is, without a doubt, what i will be calling him...

i love the signing, we need some other WRs because we only have one that is proven right now, and he is only going into his second year.

not too expensive, but major potential.

The only thing that scares me about this is...
Are our comments here the same thing another team's blog would be saying about having picked up Samie Parker?

Don't get me wrong, I want DD to succeed, but I just get this "Samie 2.0" feeling under my skin.

But that might just be an indication of how much Samie scarred me.

One things is for certain
We will have a real good idea about this signing and the others on January 1st, 2009.

Physical Characteristics
I am not sure why the relation to Parker (someone help me please), but just on physical tools here is the comparison:

Darling:  6'1"  215lbs
Parker:  5'11"  190lbs

That right there tells me something.  I just think the bigger receivers are what Chan's system calls for - blocking downfield and at the point of attack.  Hopefully Darling has a shred of Parker's speed.  My guess is we still target a burner to open up things.  Besides, he may never even crack the top 3 anyway.

Agree
this guy may pan out and become the number #2 WR, or  we may draft the future #2 WR and Darling will play flier on special teams and be the 3rd or 4th WR - we didn't pay too much for him, so I will be happy either way.  I have to believe that the Chiefs see something they like to have given him a 3-year contract though. (No one year contract shenanigans like Eddie "I don't want to work that hard" Drummond)

can we make a rule
that the name *ddie *rummond never be mentioned again?  It continues to give me the shivers, months after the season is over...
