Kansas City Chiefs Mock Draft Tracker -- #2

Jake Long still dominates most mock drafts with the Chiefs first pick. Sedrick Ellis' name is popping up more and more and he continues to grow on me. You still have the occasional QB pick, like Junkyard Jake's mock picked. I do not see that happening and I'm sure most of you don't either.

The thing with these mock drafts is that you have some who actually consider team needs and not just go with the best player. Then you have others that are much more meticulous and analytical. It's quite the mix, which is why I try to have as many mocks represented as possible.

Position
Tally
First Round Choice
OT
8 Jake Long (7) Ryan Clady (1)
QB
4 Andre Woodson (1) Matt Ryan (3)
DT
4 Glenn Dorsey (1) Sedrick Ellis (3)
DE
1 Chris Long (1)

Draft Season (Lup)

Jake Long OT, Michigan: The Chiefs would love to get their hand on Big Long Jake and help re-create their once proud offensive line.
Inside the Eagles
Long has a huge frame at 6'7" and 315 lbs. An excellent pass blocker who can protect the QB's blind side.
Draft Headquarters
The Chiefs offensive line has really gone down hill as of late. Their #1 need is clearly a franchise tackle to protect the blindside of their quarterback, whether it's Brodie Croyle or someone else. While they could look at the quarterback position, I think there's a better chance that they'll give Brodie Croyle another shot next year. Long would be a great value pick here and would be capable of coming in and helping shore up the Chiefs offensive line issues right away. If they were to go with a quarterback here, it'd be Matt Ryan from Boston College.
KC Chiefs Fanatic
While I am sure that the Chiefs would probably select Jake Long here if he’s available, they might not have that option, and instead of reaching for a lesser talent, they would be wise to grab a guy like Ellis. He has a great motor, tremendous character, and is a playmaker in every sense of the word.
Junkyard Jake
Matt Ryan, QB - Great leadership skills and poise. Makes good decisions. Above-average arm strength, good accuracy.
Draft Express
The Chiefs have a lot of work to do to get back to being a playoff team. They must improve defensively and Chris Long is too good to pass up. With Long as an addition they would likely move Tamba Hali into a 3-4 outside linebacker, like the Cowboys do with Demarcus Ware. With Long, Jared Allen, and Tamba Hali the Chiefs would have the youngest group of dominant pass rushers. Long is an impact defensive end who had 14 sacks (10th nationally), 6.3 tackles per game (4th), and 7 pass breakups (6th) as a senior for the Cavaliers.
East Coast Sports
The Chiefs greatest need is on their O-Line, but they also need help in the middle of their D-Line and in their secondary...Ellis has the ability to dominate a game.

Best case scenario . . .
is we get Jake.  Next best, we trade down into the first half of the 1st round and pick up an additional 2nd round pick.  We take Otah which leaves us two 2nd rounders to take A CB and a WR, I say Antoine Cason and Harry Douglas.

Third best scenario,we take Sedrick Ellis and then go Cherilus-OT, Lowery-CB and Benedict-OG, with rounds 2-4.  Even with a option 3 we wind up with a great draft.

If I need to I can be a Sed Head.

Cherilus
I have seen some mock drafts with him going in the 2nd round (meaning if Long doesn't fall to us, we could get Ellis and Cherilus)  also, I would be surprised to see a CB in the 2nd, even if we traded down and got another 2nd round pick.  We have serious needs on the O-line and interior d-line, and if we grab Long in the first, I wouldn't be surprised to see us take a DT in the 2nd (someone like Balmer or (god this is eerie) Sims...you can't bust on two draft picks that have the same last name and play the same position, right?)

I'd switch 2 and 3
If Long is gone, I would be perfectly happy getting Ellis or Dorsey.  Can you imagine our D-line for the next 4 or 5 years if we had:

Hali  --  Tyler  --  Ellis/Dorsey  --  Allen

for our front 4?

At this point, I'm thinking getting Ellis/Dorsey would even be more preferable to trading down for more picks.

Draft Express
is this the only guy in the world who thinks we would switch to the 3-4?  I hadn't ever considered it, but I think if we did, Turk McBride would be a  more likely candidate than Hali for converting a d-lineman to LB.  I would take some interesting shifts, but what would the advantages be?  i don't think Dorsey or Ellis would be as effective as a NT in a 3-4.  Does anybody know if Tyler played any 3-4?  (Note: I don't think we should or would make the switch, just stirring up some non-political discussion).

3-4

Makes me think he hasn't.

Has Gunther ever ran a true 3-4 defense?  I don't think the Chiefs have any players capable of playing a true nose tackle if this was case in event of taking Long(which I don't see happening).
