Friday Free Agency Open Thread (Plus Updates)

**UPDATE** DE Jimmy Wilkerson, who is an UFA, has scheduled a visit with the Bucs. Excited about free agency yet?

  • Kris Wilson, Benny Sapp, Keyaron Fox and Eddie Drummond will not be back with the Chiefs. All of those guys were unrestricted free agents, who hit the market at of 12:01 AM today. Hat tips to DJ and Eric for posting this in the diary section.

  • Rumor: Eagles will make an offer for Jared Allen.

  • New Orleans center Jeff Faine and Seattle kicker Josh Brown could visit with the Chiefs as early as today. Update: Jeff Faine has signed with the Bucs.

  • Another rumor is that free agent OLB Demorrio Williams has set up visits with the Bucs, Chiefs, and Chicago Bears.

  • From KFFL -- Calvin Watkins, of the Dallas Morning News, reports free agent CB Jacques Reeves of the Cowboys is planning to visit the Kansas City Chiefs.

  • Cowboys tackle Flozell Adams has re-signed with the team.
The rumors are going to be flying today so I'll do my best to keep this post updated with the latest news that relates to the Chiefs. Please update us in the comments too if you catch some breaking news.

This will be the main post for the day so consider it an open thread as well. Also, if you keep an eye on KFFL's free agency wire, you'll be pretty well updated.

Let's kick it off with what just released Chiefs players you think will be picked up by other teams today.

Wouldn't be surprised
to see Samie Parker sign somewhere. He's decent and still young.

Jeff Faine
I thought you could not deal for free agents before 12:01 this morning.  I will never be convinced negotiations did not start before then.  Maybe I am wrong, if so, why doesn't our front office get involved sooner?

Could you really see Herm
"cheating"? I can't. He would tell on Carl Peterson.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 29, 2008 8:45 AM CST up reply actions

I've also wondered...
why so many teams are bounced around the rumor mill for "tampering" but the Chiefs are nowhere to be found?

by dkugler838 on Feb 29, 2008 8:53 AM CST up reply actions

The trade rumor
... is indeed interesting.  Essentially, we would need to take Gholston at #5 to replace JA but at #19 we'd be able to grab an OT which would free up our 2nd round pick for a WR as we have the CB situation taken care of with Lito.

I would like to see a 3rd instead of a 4th included in the trade though.  Hopefully that's the hold up and the Eagles will soon comply.

Hate to see JA with wings on his helmet instead of an arrowhead but our team would benefit, JA would benefit, and the Eagles would benefit.

Jared
Does no one realize that he was just about the only "great" player on the team last year and that he is "young."  Everyone talks about being young, but do you just let your players go when they hit 25 or 26.  Then you are rebuilding forever.  Jared is my favorite chief since DT and i think it is rediculous to think that a guy that is a #5 draft pick is going to lead the league in sacks or that the 19 pick and a fourth pick are worth it.  Jared was the second leading touchdown catcher last year AND HE PLAYS DEFENSE!!!!  I am all for rebuilding if that is what it is but if it is just being cheap bastards then the front office can go to hell

Jared is a very good player
There is no question of Jareds talent.  But it may be a situation where no deal can be reached and if thats the case, will we ever get a better offer than a 1st round pick, a former 1st round pick player, and a 3rd round pick?  I don't think so.

It really depends on if the Chiefs legitimately see a possibility of signing JA long term or not.  I suspect if they really did, it would be done by now.

Sapp
He may a temper issue but I think some one will pick  him up, at least as a nickel back. He showed some signs of decency even if he did get burned some.

by gibsob on Feb 29, 2008 10:34 AM CST reply actions

Agreed
I would have liked to have seen Sapp stick around.

We can definitely utilize him.  The cupboard is starting to look a little bare....good thing or bad thing?

by Joel Thorman on Feb 29, 2008 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

Not retread
I thought he was a good player.  He's not old, not expensive and I thought was serviceable on the field.

But, like Dthomas said, I'm not heartbroken over it.  He'll catch on somewhere else.

by Joel Thorman on Mar 1, 2008 7:21 AM CST up reply actions

Agree, as well
Sapp did get under my skin with that outburst, but I did see some playmaking ability in him.

I am not heartbroken over it, but he was at least some low priced depth at CB.

NOOOO
trading jared allen would be the biggest mistake this organization has made.  yes, i'm saying ever.  we've talked since 03 about rebuilding the defense, and now we're talking about trading the part that made it above average.  without allen, our defense would have been bottom 10 last year.  he is a top 5 DE in football and deserves the franchise money of that top 5 caliber player.  trading him only helps the eagles, regardless of the picks we get back and lito sheppard.  in the short run, it sets us back two years.  it is rare that a pick or combination of picks could ever live up to what jared allen can do.
pat

You want great players, you have to pay them. No two ways about it.

Speaking of great players, OL Chris Bober was cut yesterday apparently. He spent all of 2007 on injured reserve.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 29, 2008 10:45 AM CST up reply actions

I like the trade
simply because there is a very very good chance he won't be here next year and we are left with nothing.  I like Jared as much as everybody else, but we need to look out for the future and that is a pretty nice haul for him.  If Jake Long is available at we take him, if not we can take Chris Long or Vernon Gholston.  At pick 19 we could look at Otah(he is the OT that I think best fits our system). Then in round 2 take either a Derrick Harvey/Calais Campbell or a WR.  I hope this trade happens.

by Tom Bahali on Feb 29, 2008 11:24 AM CST reply actions

I have to agree with Tom
although I would just hate to lose JA.  However, he can play this year with the tag and then leave next year , leaving the team with nothing in return.  Think of this from a business standpoint for just a minute.  Would you trade your best product for three of possibly better products, or hold onto it one more year with no guarantee it would ever sell for you again?

He doesn't ever have to agree to any deal with the Chiefs.

Eagles...
....Just released DE Jevon Kearse, hope this isn't a sign that a handshake was made.....

No way
The Freak is not coming to KC.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 29, 2008 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think he meant that Chris
I think he meant that they are clearing room for Jared.  Also the Eagles are extremely close to signing Asante Samuel, and if that happens this deal is as good as done IMO.

by Tom Bahali on Feb 29, 2008 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah you're right
Read it too quickly. Sorry custerflux.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 29, 2008 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

Speaking of the Eagles
Looks like Asante Samuel will end up there.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 29, 2008 11:27 AM CST reply actions

We play the Bills next year at Arrowhead
don't we?  I would love to see LJ run over Kawika.

by Tom Bahali on Feb 29, 2008 11:34 AM CST reply actions

Linebacker Kawika Mitchell
took a chance in free agency last winter and ended up with a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New York Giants.

On Friday, Mitchell chased the money, and landed a multi-year contract with the Buffalo Bills. The deal is for $17.5 million over five years, with a $3.5 million signing bonus.

by Lanier63 on Feb 29, 2008 2:51 PM CST reply actions

Samuel Signed with
the Eagles.  I also read we are looking at Patriots CB Randall Gay

by dkugler838 on Feb 29, 2008 4:15 PM CST reply actions

What kind of
compensation do we get if JA sign with the Eagles? If we lose Jared, that changes the direction of the draft. Man we need so much offensively just to be competetive.(This blows that we are even having to discuss this!)

Jared Allen trade.
Arrowhead Addict quote:

"By now everyone has heard about the various Jared Allen-Lito Sheppard (he's only 26 years old, by the way) trade rumors that are all over the Internet. We'd get Sheppard back, the No. 19 pick and another first-day pick (a third is the latest rumor), from what I've heard."

That would be a VERY tempting offer.  Jared is an elite DE and a game changer no doubt.  But if the team is at a standstill and it doesn't look like we're going to be able to resign him, rather than just letting him walk next year, lets get something for him.  I can't believe we would get a better offer than this.

Lito may not be an elite CB, but he is young and can adequately fill a position we need help in.  As Tom said, we could draft Vernon Gholston at #5 who has alot of potential and draft an OT with the 1st round pick we get from the Eagles.

We might also get a 3rd round pick that could turn out to be a Jordy Nelson or Owen Schmitt.

Jared is a great player, but this would be a tough deal to walk away from.

Wildcard
what if Jake Long is available at the number five pick? Then what I still say take Jake.

by Eric @ Arrowhead Pride on Feb 29, 2008 6:02 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed
He is of much more critical need than a DE.  We better take him if he's there.

by ilamuku on Feb 29, 2008 6:42 PM CST up reply actions

I still like J. Long
But I have a sneaking suspicion he is going to be taken by either Miami or the Falcons.

If this trade goes down and J. Long isn't there but either Chris Long or Gholston are, it would give us alot of flexibility to replace JA with one of those 2 DEs and pick up an OT with the pick we get from the Eagles.

by DJ @ Arrowhead Pride on Feb 29, 2008 6:53 PM CST up reply actions

Further thoughts
Another possibility if J. Long is available is that we take him for LT, use our pick from the Eagles to get Cromartie or McKelvin at CB to replace Surtain and give Turk McBride a shot at DE (move Tamba to the right side).  If Turk can't cut it, we can draft another DE next year.

by DJ @ Arrowhead Pride on Feb 29, 2008 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

Is there a good site for rumrs?
baseball has mlbtraderumors and I was wondering if there is a site like that for football.  I doubt it b/c there is far less trades in football then in baseball but if anyone knows of any I would appreciate it.

by TXroyal on Feb 29, 2008 5:59 PM CST reply actions

i say do it...
i love jared allen as much as the next guy, and with TG in the decline jared will likely be our only "great" player next year and bring people out to arrowhead.

but when such an opportunity presents itself, a pretty good first round pick, a solid and young corner who we can slot there for awhile, and a third round pick you just might have to take it.

we could use the 5th overall pick and draft jake long, because i still think we have to take him if he is there. take the 19th pick and either take a DE to replace hali, like calais campbell or somebody, or (better yet) take someone like jeff otah and put him at RT. i am a big fan of taking two tackles, moving damion mcintosh to RG and taking a center late in the draft. but that is another debate.

you then use the first second round pick to either take an OT or DE, depending on what you took with the 19th pick. we would then have 9 other picks to restock our roster even more, which is badly needed.

so, as much as it hurts to lose JA, i say do it...

by rockchalk on Feb 29, 2008 10:11 PM CST reply actions

TG on the decline?
He had a career year this year. Older yes, declining?

by Eric @ Arrowhead Pride on Feb 29, 2008 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

to-be-declining...
maybe he will prove me wrong and play awesome again this year.

but im just not seeing it.

i want to trade him, pick up some more draft picks, and go from there, both for his sake and ours. we arent going to really compete for awhile now, 4-5 years probably, and it doesnt make a whole lotta sense to keep him around.

plus, he deserves to win at least one playoff game in his career, and unless he is willing to play way longer than he has previously indicated, it ain't gonna happen here.

by rockchalk on Feb 29, 2008 11:23 PM CST up reply actions

I'm becoming suspicious
I can't find the Jared Allen rumor reported anywhere but Arrowhead Addict.  Everything on the net I find links back to AA.  I know it said they heard it on Fox Radio, but I'm starting to wonder if there is any substance to the trade rumor.

Josh Brown
signed with the Rams this morning, ending our dream of acquiring the pretty reliable place kicker

Drayton Florence and Jimmy Wilkerson
Looks like another CB is of the market as Florence is reportedly signed with Jacksonville and Jimmy Wilkerson is reportedly signed to Tampa Bay to a 2 year contract. When are we gonna fill some holes. The Chiefs are visiting with players in positions that are not a priority. What gives??

by lifeisdeath on Mar 1, 2008 1:36 PM CST reply actions

With the lack of activity
on the free agent front, and the massive cuts we've seen, is it pretty safe to assume we're going to be just as terrible this season?

Especially if we lose JA. I mean, the deal sounds sensible, but that's a pretty big piece of the pie we're losing.

Not criticising Herm Edwards for anything since December '07.
