Carl Peterson Says the Chiefs are Interested in Darren McFadden

Or this is just draft time BS. I love the displays of reverse psychology that go on between teams in the media. From Yahoo:

"He’s a game-changing talent," said Kansas City president Carl Peterson, whose team holds the No. 5 overall pick and has running back Larry Johnson already in the fold. "He helped himself a lot today … if he’s at No. 5 overall, I’m going to have to consider him long and hard. … And I have a great running back."
We know that picking Darren McFadden doesn't make sense for the Chiefs. Is this Carl Peterson drumming up interest for a trade if McFadden does fall to the Chiefs?

Probably a bit of both
Carl is at first a businessman and he knows what he has to do to drum up interest in that #5 pick if McFadden is there.

But, he also has to be thinking what adding McFadden to our team would do.  The critics will rage about the offensive line but Carl is thinking what two elite backs in the same back field can do.

There should be
high quality offensive linemen in the second round. Don't forget that the Chiefs rotate the 3-5 draft order each round.

Are you saying
that the second round the Chiefs get the 3rd pick in the second round?  I wasn't aware of this, but that's awesome if that's correct.

by Chiefs n Chopper on Feb 25, 2008 3:04 PM CST up reply actions

Or the 4th
I'm not sure how it rotates. But we will have the third pick at least twice.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 25, 2008 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Didn't know it rotated like that
If we get Jake Long, then getting the 5th pick, like Herm said, will end up being a great move for us.

to quote
"We know that picking Darren McFadden doesn't make sense for the Chiefs."

because God knows us taking the best available talent in the draft is NOT what we're all about...grumble, grumble...

I know, I know, Jake "Football Savior and Master Holder" Long...

Not criticising Herm Edwards for anything since December '07.

Make sense as in
not our biggest need.

I understand why you want him and I do too.  But I can certainly understand the argument against him.  We have a lot of money in Larry Johnson, who ran well when the offensive line was above average.

That's the reality of this.  We know what Larry can do behind a good offensive line.  There are no question marks.

by Joel Thorman on Feb 25, 2008 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

But what if
So let say we draft McFadden and next year when we are drafting, ANOTHER fantastic future Pro Bowler running back who might be even better is the best player available.

Do you draft him there too since he is a game changing talent?  Even though he will be sitting on the bench the entire time?

So the question is, when is enough enough?  Why do you want to keep getting star player after star player at the same position and neglect the rest?  Because when one star running back is on the field, the others most likely will not be contributing.

You hope for a star player at a position and then a solid backup player.  Otherwise, the backup is wasting his talent and the Chiefs are throwing money away on a guy who won't see the field more than a handful of plays a game.

BTW
Not saying that if all the better options are gone and we can't trade down we shouldn't draft McFadden.

I'm just making a point about how taking the best player in a draft is not always the best thing for the player or the team.

Imagine LJ's
reaction when hearing this, is his next rap song gonna dog Carl even more? I hope this is just talk to get other teams interested.

If we know why CP is saying this
I think LJ is smart enough to realize it as well.

Secretly
I'd love to have McFadden on the Chiefs. But do we have the sophistication on offense or a head coach who will utilize him?

Nope. Herm is too stubborn to change his entire coaching philosophy based on one player.

by Chris Thorman on Feb 26, 2008 6:26 AM CST reply actions

Not a bad idea
The Chiefs were 4-12 last year.  When you are 4-12 you take best player available.  Actually let me put it this way, this year's draft has 4(maybe 5 with either Gohlston and Ellis) upper echelon players, the drop off after that is huge.  So why take a project player (i.e. any CB or Ryan Clady) instead of a potential game breaker.  Cowboys, Vikings, Jags, 2006 Colts and Bears, Pats, Saints, and a number of other teams run a two back system........and they were all better than us.  Our two biggest needs are OL and CB, and this is a deep draft for both.  You might end up with a Darren McFadden, Sam Baker, Trae Williams draft.....and that would be a huge upgrade.

Scenarios
All that being said the better scenarios would be Jake Long being available, McFadden being there and us trading down, or Glen Dorsey being there.  Oh and McFadden will be gone by #5.
