Morning Update (Marlboro Football Edition)

  • The Patriots have offered former Dolphin linebacker Zach Thomas a contract.

  • Adam Teicher thinks that it is unlikely that the Chiefs extend Jared Allen a long-term contract offer. I almost certainly think they will. The use of the franchise tag is a strategic move used by the Chiefs to have more power over Allen and his rights as a free agent. It isn't a firm declaration of anything really. At least not at this point in the game. The Chiefs will get it done.

  • KC Chiefs Fanatic is starting their own mock draft, with the results based on voting. Bookmark the site and head on over there to vote on your picks.

  • The Jaguars are excited about the possibility of Jared Allen playing in Jacksonville.

  • Big Blue View echoes my view on the Combine.

  • A cigarette company sponsoring football? Indeed. (Hat tip to Hogs Haven)
Mushin Muhammad was released by the Bears yesterday. As I'm sure you've noticed, I'm not one to parade every single free agent that comes available on the front page of this site asking if he'll be a good fit in Kansas City. Muhammad will be an Eddie Kennison-like 35 years old come this May. Despite not being a young guy, I think receivers like Muhammad play important roles on football teams. Eddie Kennison was mostly injured last year but had some first down catches that reminded you why you keep a guy with solid hands around all the time.

At the right price and only if we cut Kennison, I think Mushin Muhammad fits well in KC.

I think
it is interesting what the Jaguars post has to say.  To give the Chiefs the 26th pick this year and possibly that or higher next year is a no brainer for them.  In signing a unproven rookie to a big contract and comparing that with signing Jared to an 11-12 million dollar contract is certainly a much easier decision.

I would just hate to lose Jared, but with two first round picks, we would certainly be well on the way to fixing our O line immediately.

And the bonus, if the Jags have a down year next year, our pick from them could be equally exciting.

I doubt they will have a down year next year
with or without Jared.  They are too stacked, I think they overtake Indy next season.

Who to replace
Jared Allen? Then we would be in the same position as the Jags. We would be going after an unproven rookie when we know what we have in Allen.Carl better not screw this up!

Chris
I hope Teicher is wrong, and you are right!

I have no inside info or anything
So I'm just hoping really.

I would assume Mr. Teicher has inside information. But I find it difficult to reconcile what he said with the facts. The facts would seem to point in the direction of resigning Allen.

Teicher likes to pretend he knows things
I can't even list how many times Teicher has presented a story as though he has inside knowledge when he was just guessing.

How about Paul Hackett for the new Chiefs Offensive Coordinator?  Teicher presented that as though it was a done deal.

He's just a guy that watches football and has opinions and rights those opinions as though he has heard something.  Sometimes he guesses right and it looks like he has someone on the inside.

I put no stock into anything Teicher says without a quote.

That was
my thought on Muhammed when I seen he had been cut. He is no spring chicken though.

by Eric @ Arrowhead Pride on Feb 19, 2008 9:00 AM CST reply actions

Definitely not
But I think he could be better than Kennison for one or two years.

I haven't looked
in a while, isn't he almost tight end size?

by Eric @ Arrowhead Pride on Feb 19, 2008 9:27 AM CST up reply actions

Stone Hands
He was cut from the Bears because he dropped every other ball that came his way.

Do we really want a 35 year old Sammie Parker?

A little extreme
I've read about his drops as well.  Not exactly a stable quarterback situation there in Chicago though.

He thrived in Carolina though.  Steve Smith helped but he still did really well.  Stats are here.

I called the Zach Thomas offer
the day he was cut from the Dolphins...who better to replace one of the ancient New England LB's than another slightly less ancient AFC East LB?  For my thoughts on Teicher, I would direct you to the post "Chiefs Franchise Tag Jared Allen"...I am accepting applications for the raid on the sail barge starting now...skiff pilots and temporarily blinded bounty hunters wanted.

Muhsin
would be great to have around D Bo IF we didn't have eddie K, but otherwise it wouldn't be too smart to have two dinosaurs on our team.
