Where We Stand: The Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receivers

Examining the current state of the roster, one position at a time.

Dwayne Bowe

Without a doubt, the D-Bowe show will be playing for a long time in Kansas City. Tony Gonzalez only had thirty-three receptions and 368 yards in his rookie season, which doesn't even come close to Bowe's 70 reception, 995 yard rookie year. Bowe became our no. 1 receiver (talent-wise anyway) the moment Eddie Kennison went down in the first game of the season and silenced many of his critics who didn't believe in another first round Chiefs wide receiver. Bowe was a major reason that this past season was actually watchable and he enters the 2008 season as our no. 1 receiver.

Impact in 2008: Throughout the off-season and into training camp, Bowe should only improve as he and Brodie Croyle become more comfortable together. To a certain degree, Bowe's development will be dependent on Croyle's. Bowe set the standard high in '07 and with the addition of another top-notch receiver, there's no reason he won't consistently go over 1000 yards receiving for the majority of his career.

Samie Parker

Parker enters his fifth season next year as the Chiefs no. 2/3 wideout. His time to prove himself better than that has pretty much passed. Different KC area writers have tentatively predicted breakout seasons for Parker last year and the year before but he hasn't developed much beyond the twenty-four catch type season he had in '07. This past year, Parker was good for about a first down a game, which was a significant drop off from 2006 and 2005 when he converted thirty-three and twenty-eight first downs respectively. In my opinion, him and Jeff Webb are at about the skill level.

Impact in 2008: Parker will more than likely be around in 2008, despite many of you calling for his head. The bottom line is that teams need players like him. Not every wideout is a superstar. Jeff Webb will compete for his spot so Parker, for the moment at least, slides in by default. His salary cap value for 2007 was under $1 million, making him fairly inexpensive to keep around. The emergence of Dwayne Bowe obviously had an effect on Parker's numbers and I see Parker having similar seasons to 2007 as long as he plays beside Dwayne Bowe.

Bobby Sippio

The blogosphere's Boomer Grigsby, Sippio didn't register a catch in 2007 after playing in nine games. The vast majority of that playing time was on special teams. Sippio is an unknown at this point. Hard Knocks footage and a few YouTube clips unfortunately don't tell us much beyond what we've seen. The KC coaches, apparently, haven't been confident enough in Sippio to give him many chances. The fact that he sat on the practice squad for eight weeks, where anyone had the ability to sign him, doesn't bode well for his future as a starting wide receiver in the NFL.

Impact in 2008: Unknown at this point. I can't say I see Sippio stepping in and making an impact, especially since he didn't even get any extra looks as the Chiefs season went down the drain. The Chiefs played young linemen and running backs in the last quarter of the season but Sippio never got a shot. Adding Sippio to the active roster would increase curiosity and up the entertainment value for the Chiefs though. Right now, that's the only benefit I can say he brings. It's not that I'm not a Sippio guy -- it's that I don't have enough information to make an informed decision on his ability.

Jeff Webb

Webb enters his third season next year and is on the same path as Samie Parker -- never a burner, never a game breaker but a serviceable no. 3 wideout type. One of Webb's advantages lies in the return game, where he's been known to return punts and kickoffs. Webb actually had more receptions than Samie Parker this season. I consider them to be neck and neck for the no. 3 WR spot, depending on the availability of Eddie Kennison next year.

Impact in 2008 Webb could be replaced by a rookie or a low-level free agent who has an impressive start to training camp or the preseason. He doesn't possess any exceptional skills and, like Parker, will never produce more than 30-40 catches with Dwayne Bowe starting opposite him.

Eddie Kennison

Who gets the feeling like Eddie Kennison has played his last football game? It's possible Kennison could be back, even likely. But it wouldn't come as a shock to me after a 2007 season where he couldn't stay healthy for even a short string of games if Kennison calls it quits. It's well known that Eddie would love to spend as much time with his family as possible and after a successful career, he doesn't have much left to prove. Bowe's fantastic season usurped Kennison's starting role and that will not change in 2008.

Impact in 2008: If Kennison come back and stays healthy, he would slide into the no. 2 spot behind Bowe. It's not unthinkable that Kennison could have 50+ receptions in 2008 if he plays the whole season. A veteran presence in the WR corp would be nice, seeing how Samie Parker doesn't have the reputation for being much of a leader.

Jared Allen

Coming in second in touchdown receptions last year, Jared Allen managed to average a mean 1.5 yards per catch last year. Virtually uncoverable, each of Allen's two catches went for touchdowns, a feat no other defensive linemen in the league can boast about.

Impact in 2008: Will be on the defensive line.

Outlook for Next Year

The Chiefs would be wise to bring in some heavy competition for the wide receiver position, seeing how Webb and Parker don't have that fire underneath them. A bit of a shake-up would do some good. Parker's been hanging around at a subsistence level for far too long. He needs to at least show improvement from year to year, even if it isn't by leaps and bounds. I wouldn't advise the Chiefs to break the bank this off-season on a wideout but some judicious searching, even in the undrafted free agent arena, wouldn't do any harm.

Draft
What are everybody's thoughts on if and at what spot the Chiefs would draft a WR in 2008?  With all of the other needs, I can't see them spending a first day pick on a WR, unless we trade down and have 2 second round picks...even then, there are things we need more (sometimes I think we should just draft 10  o-linemen...not really, but we definitely need at least 3 new starters there by August).

A bit out of date
But I can't find a definitive list just yet.

Refresh
my memory, did we let Joe Horn go or did he leave on his own?  Had he been able to do the things here that he did in NO, makes me wonder what kind of offense we COULD have had?

by Lanier63 on Jan 9, 2008 12:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He didn't play much
in KC (three years, 53 receptions) and left after his rookie contract was up.

I
don't dislike Sammie Parker because of his play at WR.  I dislike him because of his flop at the end of the Lions game.  I've gone over and over that in my mind and can only imagine that (a) he didn't know that the game was OVER or (b) he was afraid of getting hit.  And don't give me the bullshit that he "slipped" or "tripped" because you don't slip forwards and I've seen him make that same diving flop before.

How about 2b?
The official Halfbreed half@ss offseason acquisition plan, including free agency and mock draft resides below;  (half@ss because it is based on the assumption that St. Louis has taken Jake Long with their #2 pick.)

Round 1.      Trade our # 5 pick to Chicago who wants to get ahead of Carolina and
possibly the Ravens in order to pick whichever QB Atlanta doesn't pick.
They will be especially hot to trade if we win the flip with Atlanta.  We
get their 1st round #14 pick, their 2nd round #46 pick and their 2009 3rd
Round pick, whatever that may be.  With the #14 pick KC takes OT Jeff
Otah as Denver has already picked Ryan Clady at #12.

Round 2a.    With the # 26 or #37 pick we take Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, CB a good athlete who works well in zone coverage.  By my estimation he will be the 5th CB off the board.  However, we take Aqib Talib here if he is still
available.

Round 2b.    Harry Douglas, WR speedster out of Louisville.  He will stretch the field for Bowe and TG allowing them to do what they do underneath, while giving us a legitimate return threat.

Round 3.    Some say that this is too early for him but Owen Schmitt FB made such a good showing in his bowl game that his stock has risen considerably.  If we take him here, we've found our replacement for T-Rich that we've so desperately needed.

Round 4.    Toss-up.  Either John Greco or Chad Rinehart, both are OT's that will move into the RT position over the next year or two after Macintosh fades away.

Round 5a. thru 7b.  From what I've seen Kuharich and the rest of the draft team do recently, I'm completely comfortable with BPA from this point on.  I think some LB's ( Castelo, Lansanah) that can contribute on special teams and develop into a back-up position would be in order.  Maybe, (GASP) a kicker.  An OG or two would be nice.

BUT WAIT ! ! !

THERE'S MORE ! ! !

In Free Agency I see two key pick-ups that could help the Chiefs right away in the trenches.

1.) Ryan Lilja OG

He might cost a bit but he'll solidify the center of the line right away plus give our new guys a good young veteran to learn from.

2.) Corey Williams DT

A proven young lineman who might want a bigger payday than we're willing to give, but I think he'll be willing to work with us contract-wise to become an anchor next to Boone, allowing Tank a bit more time to develop his potential.

I'm all for
Getting a receiver in the second round..The chiefs owe it to themselves to establish the reciever corps as a strength..Bowe will be amazing. Jeff Webb will be a good 3rd receiver, but we need someone who complements bowe..Someone like Limas Sweed or maybe a burner..I think we'll see what Michael Allen can do this year as a receiving tight end..I think its unlikely we can expect Kennison to perform like he used to..He just did not look good at all this year..With Bowe, Limas Sweed, and webb, (All young, tall, and big)added with Tony G we have potential for a very successful passing game. Oponents wouldn't be stacking the line..With all that aside I'm just curious as to why Sippio wasn't given playing time..I highly doubt webb or parker could have done the stuff he did in the arena league..I'm hoping he's able to compete for a job.

by mikey159 on Jan 9, 2008 1:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Sippio
Could the reason he was never in on a pass play be that he just can't learn the routes?  That's the only thing I can think of that would have kept him off the field when we were plugging in other young guys...I know he played arena league but maybe something is not translating in the NFL.  He can catch, he's not a burner (but neither are Webb or Parker), he seems willing to do whatever it takes (blocking, special teams, etc.) so something is going on that we don't know about.  I don't think Edwards would pass on an opportunity to evaluate him in a real game.  Any other speculation?

Sammie Parker...
I thought his contract was up? Isn't he an UFA?

by Zach on Jan 9, 2008 3:28 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Wide Receivers
Assuming we want 4 receivers, one of them being a kick return specialist...

Bowe is #1 of course.

I think Kennison will come back for one more season.  It would be to the Chiefs benefit to have a veteran like Eddie around to help out the young guys.  That makes him the #2 receiver.

Sammie Parker is an UFA and I can't see the Chiefs re-signing him.  Not because of my personal dislike for him, but because he is not an ascending player.  He has made no progress in his years here.  He is as good as he will ever be and that ain't saying much.  Replace him with a young guy that has potential.

Webb will be the #3 receiver.  As Chris said, he is never going to be a superstar, but he has played decently as an alternative when Bowe is getting doubleteamed.

I really believe the Chiefs need to draft someone 1st day whose primary job is kick returns.  With the ball control offense Herm wants to run, your returner being able to put the team in good field position is vital and one of the most important talent needs for the Chiefs in my opinion.

They tried Webb and he did better than the dreadful Drummond, but if we are going to have an offense that doesn't score alot, we need a returner that can help bail us out like Hester has done for the Bears.

Draft a fast guy that has had success returning in college who can be a burner to stretch the field as a wide receiver as well.

by DJ on Jan 9, 2008 5:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

5 Wide Receivers
Don't most teams who use a WR to return kicks have 5 WR's?  I think you only keep 4 if you have a DB or HB returning kicks.  If 5 is the number we are going with, then we need to replace Parker and Drummond.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 10, 2008 7:01 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Drummond
is technically listed on the roster as a WR. I didn't include him for obvious reasons.

by Chris Thorman on Jan 10, 2008 7:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah
I know he is gone...I was just saying that unless we have a different position returning kicks, we will probably have 5 WR's on our active roster.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 10, 2008 8:16 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I wasn't disagreeing
Just pointing out that Drummond's awfulness causes me to omit him from things I might otherwise include him in.

by Chris Thorman on Jan 10, 2008 8:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Did he drastically change his style?
I don't see how his current strategy of returning kicks (running full speed right at the pile of people) ever got him into the Pro Bowl.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 10, 2008 9:09 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Blocking? Blind luck?
The year he went to the Pro Bowl he only played in a handful of games but returned like four kicks for TDs.

by Chris Thorman on Jan 10, 2008 9:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Really
Then the 4 TD's probably came against the 4 worst coverage units in the league...if they guy were fast, I could pin some of the blame on our blocking...but he doesn't even look like he is running that quickly.  Oh well, old news, 'cause I am sure he is gone the first day we make cuts.

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 10, 2008 12:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Sammie is gone Zach...
well, I hope so anyway, Sammie Parker is an UFA this off season.  As long as the Chiefs don't resign him, then I have to believe they are headed in the right direction.
Steven

If there was a steal out there....
this would be the position IF we could get someone who can do double duty as a punt/kickoff returner.  That includes someone who plays cornerback.  Clearly thats a whole and someone could come in and steal a spot.  Not sure who is out there.  For that reason.  Webb is a maybe, Parker is a FA and will be gone and Kennison is a major question but I think he's seen his last game as a Chief.  We will be looking at an entire new team on Offense except at the primary skill positions....
