What about Shaun Rogers?

From the diaries. I have to give it up for primetime and others for posting diaries as of late. Many thanks to all of you. --Chris

Shaun Rogers is going to be traded or released from the Detroit Lions.

Rogers is 28 and his career stats can be seen here.

I know there are a lot of people out there who think we still have issues at DT.  Rogers seems young enough to have some left in the tank.

I think this would be a good fit.  He does have 3 years left on his contract but if he plays up to his potential then I think it would be worth it.

"Rogers is immensely talented and can dominate a game. He has been to two Pro Bowls. But he doesn't always get the most out of talent, and Marinelli, a former defensive line coach, hasn't been able to reach him the way he reached Warren Sapp in Tampa Bay."

Defensive player having trouble hitting his potential: Meet Herm Edwards.

Not sure about that
I'm not real crazy about getting another vet DT.  We got Alfonso Boone last year to help us get by.

It's hard to keep reminding ourselves because we've been in bandaid mode for so long, but we're not really trying to patch up quick holes for a playoff push for the next year or two.

What we need more than anything is to give our young players playing time to develop and how are you going to do that when you have free agent vets taking up playing time?

Not that we shouldn't get free agents, but if you figure by the time we draft players, give them a year or two to gain experience and develop, we're probably 3 years away from being serious Super Bowl contenders.

So what good does getting a guy like Rogers now do us when in three years when we SHOULD be looking for free agents to fill holes for a playoff run and he's 31 or 32 and maybe gotten some injuries and is past his prime?

I'm all for snagging younger free agents that will still be in their prime and playing by the time the team as a whole is ready for a playoff push, but really I think its a waste of cap space and even more importantly, a waste of playing time for developing young players.

I would take him if,
and only if, we could get him for a 5th round pick, and the Lions paid the majority of his contract.  He would very quickly become Napolean's BFF, because he would keep those blockers off him.  It really wouldn't be a bad idea to get an established guy like him so we DONT have to keep wasting 1st day picks on DT.

i would love it
get this guy.  i have no idea what the lions want for him.  either way, this guy dominates.  he is a better player than chester mcglockton ever was.  he is currently a top 5 DT in the entire league.  sure he may be hard to reach, but he is a great player.  pair him w/ an 'anchor' type DT and we have runstopping solved.  i understand he's never been a part of an especially good defense...in any capacity...but he destroys more plays than i ever see for a team i rarely watch.  put him w/ a competent group....he becomes a star and elevates that defense to elite status.  i hope that is our defense if this rumor is true.

Iffy
I am not completely sure that he would be a good move for us.  I am on the fence...sure it would be great to let young guys get some playing time, but having another guy to tutor them would help too.  he just finished his 7th season, so he could have 5 more seasons in his tank (Sapp just retired after 12 years, and might have played longer if the Raiders weren't at the beginning of a rebuilding process)...how has Rogers health been in his 7 year career.  Is he injury prone?

by PVChiefsfan on Jan 24, 2008 7:13 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

The only thing he is prone to
is taking plays off and getting winded.  You can bet that Gunther and Herm would covet this guy if he were available at the right price.  Also, with a guy brought in to start right away, Tank and Turk could learn a few things at their young age.  Remember, they are in their early 20s.  Let's say 3 years of Rogers and he's gone - our rookies will be just reaching their prime.  I don't know for sure though - fun to think about having a virtually guaranteed DOMINANT DT.

Every Big Fatty gets winded
as long as he hasn't had problems with persistent injuries, I don't think it's crazy to expect 4 more years out of the guy (which, coincidentally is the time I expect us to have Tony G.) let's try to do whatever we can to get Gonzalez a playoff victory in the next 4 years.

With the
Marinelli, Edwards connection never know.

I know
Sapp retired, but other players have retired to get away from a bad team. What are the odds that he did that and feels like he could contribute somewhere, could that be here? Would we have to give something up to get him, would the Raiders have first rights?

by Eric on Jan 24, 2008 9:32 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Let's say he has a four year contract
And retires two years into the contract.  He can't go anywhere for 2 years.  I think that is the way it works.  I remember when people were talking about Barry Sanders retiring and coming back into the league but he still had like 4 years left on his deal with Detroit.

So what your sayin is that
Barry Sanders is coming back to play for the Chiefs?

Rogers at 28, it is his time for a big payday
While I like the run stop, as a free agent, he'll come with a big price tag because he is already established.  Given some of the existing contracts coming due in the next 2-3 years, a heafty payday could come at a price of some of our youth just as they are beginning to mature and bring credibility to the team.  Allen is a must keep for our secondary to develop their coverage scheme.  I expect Tank and Turk to really step up this year now having a year of experience under their belt.  I'm not saying its a bad move, but given the cost of a top 5 pick, Allen's contract negotiations, and future contracts in years to come, we could run the risk of mortgaging the future.  It would have to be a sweet deal that doesn't side track a rebuilding effort. No doubt he can come in and contribute, but whats the cost?

Rogers has 3 years left
I think his salaries are like $4 million, $4.5 million, and $7 million.

Don't know if we would even want to resign him after 3 years.  He would be 31 years old at that point.
