Open Game Thread - Kansas City Chiefs (1-2) v. San Diego Chargers (1-2)

 VS.

When: 3:15 Central Time

Where: Some corporate named stadium in San Diego

Chargers in the blogosphere: Bolt Hype

Weather: High of 80, light winds. Updated game weather is here.

A glance at the betting lines show that San Diego is right around a twelve point favorite this afternoon. With the exception of the Dallas/St. Louis game today, that spread is the largest spread of any game today.

Before the game, make sure you've caught up on everything that's been written here lately, especially in the diary section. Make sure you've ventured a guess in the Official Brodie Croyle Pick 'Em Contest. More than a few picked this afternoon's game as the game that Brodie Croyle replaces Damon Huard for the season. There are prizes at stake too...

The Chiefs defense will, as usual, keep this game close up to a certain point. We'll need to see Downfield Damon again to have a shot. We'll need a couple touchdowns and even more field goals. My prediction for the game (leave yours in the comment section) is a Chiefs win, 23 to 20. Despite the win, I don't see Larry Johnson rushing for 100 yards. His sore hamstring coupled with a dominant San Diego run defense doesn't bode well for LJ. I have two friends who made a bet that Larry Johnson would not rush for 1200 yards this season. Before the season started, that would have been a lowball of Larry's numbers. That's only a 75 yard a game average. Right now, Larry needs to average right around 81 yards a game for the rest of the season to hit 1200 yards. I wouldn't make that bet now.

Alright enough gloom for this morning. The Chiefs march into San Diego, stomp all over the Chargers for a huge divisional win and fly back home to KC triumphant.

Lets start off with some individual player predictions to get the conversation started.

GO CHIEFS!!!

Just returned a punt for a TD. Looked good doing it too.

Bowe
95 yards receiving and a touchdown. He keeps up the TD streak.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 1:39 PM CDT reply actions

Patrick Crayton
Is on both of my fantasy teams this week. 150 yards and 2 TDs.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 2:11 PM CDT reply actions

TG
Will have over 100 yds and a touchdown, I think he good-naturedly wants to get that TD back that Bowe took from him, and will be playing fiesty.  Unfortunately Steroids Merriman will probably have a sack or two, but I think our O-Line will play fairly well, and I definitely predict 2 sacks between Tamba and Jared, I just don't know who gets them.  I'm also thinking we're due for blocking a punt.

GO CHIEFS!!!

DJ
I want to see the Chiefs have DJ kind of shadowing LT the entire game, if nothing else to hopefully slow him down.  I think he's got the best speed at linebacker to do it, and if we do do it, I think LT would really struggle.

Bolt Hype
said that Sproles isn't exactly impressing the Chargers coaches.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:17 PM CDT reply actions

Gates
was so far ahead of Edwards there. Hopefully that won't happen again.

here we go

chargers driving
lets see the defense do something

KC needs to stay in this game, the Chargers are emotionally fragile

by royalsreview @ Arrowhead Pride on Sep 30, 2007 3:20 PM CDT reply actions

San Diego
is pretty much marching down the field at will on this first drive. Nothing impressive by the Chiefs defense so far.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:23 PM CDT reply actions

NIce hustle
by Jared Allen to push LT to the sideline.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:25 PM CDT reply actions

I'll take a field goal
The defense stiffened up on the goal line.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:26 PM CDT reply actions

Sippio sighting
Didn't he just down that kickoff?

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Ugly pass
by Huard. Almost picked off.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:34 PM CDT reply actions

Damn
Huge gain by Vincent Jackson. Poor tackling by the Chiefs....

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:38 PM CDT reply actions

Allen
almost had LT in that run up the gut. Barely slipped through his hands.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:39 PM CDT reply actions

Easy TD
for LT. Allen again lunged at him behind the line but couldnt' get close enough.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:40 PM CDT reply actions

Replay
Ron Edwards just bounced off of LT at like the three yard line.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:41 PM CDT reply actions

our defense has sucked so far
like really bad.

the problem is we cant get any pressure, at all, even when we blitz. and when we dont, he has all the time in the world to pick apart our D.

and damon huard looks scared...

i think they will score only 17 or 20 points, it is just whether we can score that many.

doesnt look too promising.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 3:43 PM CDT reply actions

Chicago
lost to the Lions. The lLions returned an onside for a TD.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:49 PM CDT reply actions

Broncos
are leading the Colts 10 to 0.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:51 PM CDT reply actions

IF you're in KC
looks like a big storm is coming through.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 3:58 PM CDT reply actions

My brother claims
to be the biggest Chiefs fan but he's asleep right now next me. What an ass.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:00 PM CDT reply actions

1000/yards a season
isn't what it used to be. Thats barely 60  yards rushing a game.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:06 PM CDT reply actions

Dammit
Chargers picked off a deflected Huard pass. Fuck.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:10 PM CDT reply actions

That was a horrible pass attempt
It would have hit the ground ten yards before the WR.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:11 PM CDT reply actions

No room for Neal
Ron Edwards actually makes a play.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

No touchdown again
for the Chiefs defense. We can win like this.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:13 PM CDT reply actions

If things get worse
then yeah, I could see him come in.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:18 PM CDT reply actions

Larry looks so, so much slower than LT
he's just plodding along, whereas LT has been shredding tackles and exploding.  I mean, 5 yard runs are good, but we need some bigger chunks sometimes...

by thehulk on Sep 30, 2007 4:19 PM CDT reply actions

LT
looks so much faster than LJ.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Damn
Kris Wilson will not be denied!

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:19 PM CDT reply actions

Two straight
bad passes by Huard. What do we see in him again?

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

thats the thing
sure, he looks really good at times but huard at his best isnt where croyle is at his best.

and they both are inconsistent and make equal amounts of mistakes...

which is why playing huard makes little sense...

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

great run by wilson...
but then two horrible huard passes basically halt the drive.

come on huard, make it up.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

wow
you're right that Huard looks scared.  He seems to throw 5 dump-offs for every "long" attempt

by thehulk on Sep 30, 2007 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

The all important
3rd down conversion. Come on Chiefs!

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

Please please
don't get into half down by more than ten.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:23 PM CDT reply actions

Ty Law
INT! Not a bad return! Right before half baby! Thats our time to score.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:24 PM CDT reply actions

ron edwards with another really good play
he is having a great game...

edwards and boone are a pretty good starting set of DT's, and tank tyler is a good 3rd DT too...

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:25 PM CDT reply actions

They're
exceeding my expectations.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

THAT'S
what i call the Dwayne Bowe show!!!!

by thehulk on Sep 30, 2007 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

Bowe! Bowe!
What a catch! Amazing! Nice job by the o-line.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

that was all larry
and to "thehulk", LJ runs slower than most RB's.

that is his style, to plod along and make people both miss and run them over. it works, so im not complaining although LT's style is a much more exciting style...

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:27 PM CDT reply actions

BOWE BOWE BOWE
i love dwayne bowe...

what a great catch.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:28 PM CDT reply actions

no need to be formal,
you can just call me 'hulk'.  And yes, I love to see him run over defenders, he just doesn't seem to be accelerating at all.

by thehulk on Sep 30, 2007 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

it sure would be nice to get a TD here
but before the last drive i said as long as we go in down one possession, ill be very happy.

our offense will hopefully make adjustments again and play much better in the second half, and we get the ball first.

and our defense is playing a lot better...

so at the very least we need a FG, but if we get a TD...HUGE!

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:30 PM CDT reply actions

Looks like we'll go into
half time down a TD. I'm happy with that. Hopefully Solari and Herm can adjust like they did last week.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

not bad going into the half down one TD
when we get the ball to start.  hopefully we can put another drive together.

by thehulk on Sep 30, 2007 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

Speaking relatively
Holding the Chargers to 13 in the first half is pretty good.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:32 PM CDT reply actions

like i said
im happy going into half down a TD...

hopefully we turn it on again on offense in the second half like last week, we wre down by a TD last week too.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

Grigsby is in?
Apparently he made that special teams tackle.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

wow is the sky rumbling
my tv is 'stuttering' a bit...god i hope the picture doesn't cut out when it starts dumping.

by thehulk on Sep 30, 2007 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

Gasp
Pollard saves a TD. Dear lord...

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:34 PM CDT reply actions

i think page gets him,
but at the very least he saved 20 yards and they still arent in FG position.

but now they are.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

crap crap crap
they are just trying to run out the clock and we cant stop them.

that is really annoying.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

Chargers get 3
Time to check out this storm...

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 4:41 PM CDT reply actions

Wow
Did Bowe just get that first down?? Nope. Close to it though. Nice effort.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 5:00 PM CDT reply actions

Defense
Keeping us in the game!!!
You play to win the game!

by tailgateandwin on Sep 30, 2007 5:26 PM CDT reply actions

DJ!!!
our defense is damn good.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 5:26 PM CDT reply actions

TONY GONZALEZ!!!!
wow, i cant believe this game is freakin' tied.

and now he has the record...

dang, he caught that in TRIPLE COVERAGE.

come on D, lets keep it comin'...

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

dwayne bowe catches everything...
dick enberg is in love with him.

it is nice to have two go-to guys on our offense, even if they will eventually BOTH be double teamed somehow.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 5:36 PM CDT reply actions

DWAYNE BOWE!!!
3rd and 19, no problem.

kind of off the record, but solari looks infinitely better today than before halftime against minnesota.

maybe our offense has a chance afterall this season.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 5:44 PM CDT reply actions

sippio does it all
just made a GREAT tackle on special teams.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 5:46 PM CDT reply actions

where did everyone go?
is the storm that bad?

the INT sucked, but our D has been lights out the second half and DJ got there...

tyron brackenridge baby, 30-16 AT san diego.

suckers.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

Computer died
Only have a minute on it now.

by Chris Thorman on Sep 30, 2007 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

and now our defense is struggling
i actually think its more SD's offense, they were getting too cute and now are just running their offense.

they could be a lot better if they just did this the entire time...

but we NEED to get some more pressure, they have plenty of time.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 6:04 PM CDT reply actions

come on defense...
3rd and goal.

at least get it to 4th down, put some pressure on them.

even if they dont score, we will be on our own 5. if we win this game we need to get at least two, probably 3 more first downs.

we need ya know LJ, hopefully solari rides him unless it is obvious we arent gonna get it.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 6:06 PM CDT reply actions

Holy Crap
Is this going to happen?

Go Chiefs!

Fucking Brackenridge - welcome to the NFL man!!

You play to win the game!

by tailgateandwin on Sep 30, 2007 6:14 PM CDT reply actions

I can't believe it ...
I'm at work. Saw the halftime score and the weak 1st half stats by the Chiefs, but now ... WOW. What a difference a half makes - again.
Way to hold 'em, D.
And O. just hold on to the ball.
If we win this game, maybe even if we don't I sure hope NFL replay uses it (since I'm waay out of the home broadcast area.)

GAME OVER!!!!
we just beat SD in san diego.

and not just by a FG or TD, as the most optimistic cheifs fans said, but by 14 points.

we outscored them 24-0 in the second half.

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 6:16 PM CDT reply actions

yeah, yeah, yeah baby!!
Dang, I wish I'd some serious money -- any money on this game!
The commentators/analysts are going to sh__ing themselves all over this game!

by NYChiefsFan on Sep 30, 2007 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Whoohoo!
I have to say this team is proving me wrong.  I thought there was no chance we would win this game or even be 2-2 right now.

Way to go!  Bowe is the man!

by Pauli on Sep 30, 2007 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

we sure are a second half team
gunther has always been good at adjustments, another testament to that today.

but what is awesome for our future is solari has made good adjustments two weeks in a row, ill take a half of crappy football and playcalling as long as we play like we did today in the second half.

DWAYNE BOWE BABY!!!

by rockchalk on Sep 30, 2007 6:26 PM CDT reply actions

Dwayne Bowe
New KC hero.  He goes up and gets the ball, I love it.

When I thought best case scenario for this game, i didn't even think we would put up 30 on SD.
