Morning Update (Kelly Kapowski Edition)

Here's a topic to get you going this morning besides coffee (Who am I kidding? Blog or not, I need that coffee). Is rebuilding in the NFL a myth? Is it even possible with the short careers at many key positions and with free agency?

Chew on that while I make another post magically appear.

Not a Myth
The Colts did it. The Niners are doing it. The Bengals did it. The Chargers have done it.

As with most things in the NFL, a lot of it is luck, and a lot of it is coaching.

For instance, is there anyone that thinks that the last few years were a fluke in San Diego? No. But with Sad Panda Norv Turner running the show, they've gone to hell and lost all the work they've put in.

As far as luck, if Drew Bledsoe hadn't gotten trainfucked on the sideline and had internal bleeding, they'd still be puttering along at 8-8, probably. But he did, Brady became Jesus, and here we are, waiting for the final score, Patriots 38, Cowboys 14.

But you can rebuild with young talent as long as you have a scheme on both sides of the ball that works and you obtain the talent to run it. Currently, we're running a ball control offense with a crappy offensive line, small, fast receivers (except for DBowe), and the best tight end in the history of professional football. So there's that. But on the other side of the ball, Gunther's put in a scheme and gotten the players to run it. We need to reload at defensive back and we're going to be a 5 defense. If we ever get off the field. Ever.

I agree
Our defense is well on its way to being a force again.  We have youth at every position except for CB and weak-side LB ,though the way Donnie Edwards keeps in shape he may be back there until he is Trent Green's age :)  In two years, I think the staring D-line of Hali, Tank, Turk, and Allen will cause all kinds of havoc and the oldest of them (Allen) will hopefully only be about halfway through his career.  Derrick Johnson, Pollard, and Page are going to continue to grow.  I am actually really excited about all aspects of the Defense for the first time in a while.

Herm Not Top 5
Bill Callahan
Norv Turner
Dave Wannstedt
Houston Nutt
Gregg Robinson.

Herm's only, like, 12th.

That lifetime below .500 mark is really ugly. Although I did notice something. None of his teams have ever started with a winning record after 6 games. Hope for the second half?

3 things
  1. I played with two broken ribs in high school in the state semifinal game.  I was a tailback/corner and I got two shots before the game for pain and two shots at half time for the pain.  It made my entire body number but after the game I had to go to the hospital b/c I could not breath.
  2. I was watching Remember the Titans the other day and the assistant coaches daughter is Hayden Pantettiere.  It is weird b/c she is like 10 and she looks like she does now but in miniature.
  3. I think the chances for making the playoffs are better then 8.4%, personally.  If we win, like I think we will this weekend, we will more then likely be tied for first with the Broncos, who will lose this weekend.  In fact I think there is a good chance the Chiefs win their next 4 games with a outside chance of 6 in a row.

Prob not SD
but a JAX/CIN, at OAK, GB and DEN run is possible.

Jax/cin I could see us splitting, and then beating oak and hopefully GB and DEN is always tough.

The Donkeys?
Denver is almost never tough...at Arrowhead.  I think the GB game may be tougher than Denver.

At Arrowhead it's usually pretty tight
At least the last dozen years or so.  At Denver is where it's never close, they own us bad there.

i disagree with both
it is always pretty close, no matter what the scoreboard says.

we almost always end up winning at home just as they do, but there is always a scare....

Waaaah
I commend Marc Bulger's toughness but playing with two broken ribs won't help my fantasy team.

Hehehheee - I have been waiting for an e-mail all week.  Consider my $10 as fees paid for the fantasy league.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

You play to win the game!

Yeah yeah
We'll see who's laughing at the end of the season. I'm sure we'll have another bet.

Rebuilding is totally a myth
I have been saying that rebuilding is a myth since two seasons after the advent of free agency.  Unless you've locked in your key players with iron-clad, long-term contracts, it's just not possible to "rebuild."

But, from a PR perspective (and I say this as a PR professional), it's a good line to feed the media and keep the fans placated beyond the season.  Nothing like false hope.
